WWE will never get it right, will they? WWE can never get it right because this thread proves you can't please everyone. A lot of people, myself included, found babyface champ Punk 1. irrelevant 2. bland and I thought it was a great turn. Other people, as this thread shows, are clearly upset about this. WWE can never get it right because they can't do two diametrically opposite things at once. Thank you. I don't see what the difference between your favorite wrestler being a face or a heel is. People will cheer whoever they want to, regardless. Punk being a heel works better for their planned Rock Royal Rumble match apparently, but virtually nothing about heel Punk is different than face Punk save the heel version will be able to drop legit pipe bombs on live TV again. If that is the WWE 'getting it wrong' I'm glad we fans aren't in control, quite frankly.

And so are each and every one of YOU!" over and over again.

I love Punk turning heel, he is so much better that way. Babyface Punk was bland, boring and uninteresting, just like Sheamus.
Some people work as faces, I will admit Cena is a great face. Punk however have talent as a heel, so this turn pleases me greatly.

But why would they promote Punk as being that much weaker than Cena if they plan on keeping him as a rebel face? They wouldn't have had him get "phantom pinned" in 5-10 minutes and then saved by Show later if they planned on keeping him as a face. Nevermind not helping Cena and then laying out The Rock. Everything about that ending has Punk turning heel, and this is not the late-90's. Austin was an exception. It is a lot more black and white now. They could have kept Punk face and still had him attack The Rock (they did that with Cena two years ago), but everything in that match showed a heel Punk (weakness, turning his back on Cena, etc). They had Cena beat Punk in every match they had but the ref would miss it. It's the common theme in their matches and really every Cena match where he loses to someone WWE doesn't see the person on Cena's level. Punk has always played the smarter than everyone else wrestler so why would he attack a guy that destroyed him last week? Outside of the AJ stuff, Punk has always done that stuff. The only heelish thing he did tonight was attack Rock and WWE knows that will divide people into two camps, Pro-Rock and Pro-Punk, just like they did with Cena and Rock. Maybe he turns heel next week by beating the hell out of Cena and making out with Big Show over but until they explain what happens calling him a heel is fantasy booking bulls***. Straight from WWE.com: We don't know where they are going right now and won't find out until next week. Do you honestly believe they have the intention of keeping Punk face after what happened last night? If he went even steven with Cena and then attacked the Rock, it would be more consistent with WWE's booking of top faces. But last night, they made Punk look pretty bad in that match. Cena is made to look strong all the time, fine, but I'm assuming Punk isn't made to look that weak as a face either. They didn't make Punk look weak when he was feuding with HHH, for example (they just made him look wrong and stupid...but he was feuding with God himself so it was understandable), and Punk was more of a tweener in that feud. You can wait and see. Maybe Punk will remain a face and just be anti-Rock. However, I think you will be very disappointed if that is your expectation. The WWE isn't exactly known for its strong, subtle writing, at least not nowadays.

I want to say that there's no way Rock/Punk can be a more obnoxious build than Rock/Cena, but I fear that Punk's integrity, that he bases so much of his character on, has been so shattered (by this hypocritical pseudo-John Cena run, pushing the AJ Lee line in the press, etc) that it probably won't be any better. Isn't it kind of funny that in the past CM Punk heel turns have all been marked by legendary promos, but the 2012 CM Punk heel turn is as silent and unremarkable as anything else to do with CM Punk in 2012.

Period.

Y'know what would've been better? If King didn't outright say "Looks like Punk turned his back on the WWE fans Universe", and was left confused by what the hell was going on, adding more ambiguity towards the whole thing.

Honestly, the only thing giving me hope that he might not go back to playing the "DRUGGIE DRUGGIE DRUGGIE" card over and over is that he didn't he his usual "I'm the Devil" grin that he ALWAYS does as a heel.

He was hardly stroking his mustauche and crackling evilly, in fact he looked almost distraut as he was leaving the ring.

Thought it was great, personally - sarcastic, whiny, snarky heel Punk is way better than sarcastic, whiny, snarky face Punk.

I enjoyed the ending. Heel Punk is bound to be more interesting than bland, generic, WWE-Buzzword spewing, lame catchhrase using, face Punk.

Cena taking shots at Rock and getting booed with a little cheers is okay. That his "thing".
Everyone else has to not be a face for it to really work.

About 3 weeks ago I mentioned Punk was getting lame, many agreed with me, after tonight I can safely say Punk has his edge back... I'm happy and I'm excited about next week but this is the Internet so........
.... Ughhhhhjjhh this is so dumb Punk was berried he should be face it should have ended with The Rock literally passing a torch to Punk while Cena nods approvingly in the background but nooooo Vince had to let his ego get in the way so instead Punk is the first person to defend against a MITB cash in and left the biggest star in WWE history laying in a crumpled mess at his feet while he stood tall to close Raw 1000.... Totally and completely buried

I have no issue with Punk turning heel, my issue is with the way he turned heel.
Earlier in the night, he, Rock and DB had an in ring segment, Rock took the piss out of DB, when he spoke to Punk, he was polite and wished him luck. Punk didn't appear to have any beef with Rock, nor even be that annoyed that Rock has a match at the Rumble.
Later, in the main event, he hesitated for ages about covering Cena after Show ran in, making it really seem like he was conflicted and didn't want to do the heelish thing.
Then he randomly attacks Rock for trying to help Cena, takes title, walks slowly away and get lambasted from commentary to confirm this as a heel turn.
That was just bad booking. Had the foreshawdowed the turn by having him and Rock show much more animosity earlier in the night, fine. Had they had him show less hesitation about taking the hell from Show, fine. But there was none of this.
Instead, he came off as a face, or as much of a face as Punk ever is, for most of the night, bar those last few minutes in the middle of a set of run ins.
It didnt work for me.
I couldn't care less about torch carrying or handing over or any bollocks like that. I don't watch for that sort of stuff. I watch for the actual storylines, and that ending was poorly written in regards the actions of the principal people involved for the rest of the same night.

The way I would've done it, have it play out like it did, but have Punk help Cena in beating up Big Show, but to no avail, leading to Rock running in to beat up Show. Tease some tension, but not have Punk beat up on Rock. End show.

I wouldn't say there was no foreshadowing. It was obvious that he was going to attack Rock when he slipped out of the ring while Rock was getting in. Especially after the crap with Eve the past week.

...I kind of want Punk to play the "abusive boyfriend" to the fans now. Not the grimacing, mustache-twirling villain, but a guy who basically says "Fine, you can cheer me if you want, but I still don't give a damn about you. If you were dying in the street, I'd drop my pants and take a dump on your dying body. But I know I can't stop you from cheering me anyway. Just know I hurt you once, and I'll hurt you again. And again and again and again. And you'll keep coming back because you love the abuse."
