I was browsing through the WWE title history and saw the Mysterio to Cena title change from last year. That's gotta be one of the most frustrating matches to me. I mean two of the biggest faces of the company facing off for the title for the first time, that is a big money match, and they didn't even give it one week's build. I don't even know if they gave it one hour's build.
That was a PPV main event type match, but I would even have been okay with it being a Raw main event if they had given it one or two weeks build up on TV. I still don't understand their logic in giving that match away when they did, I know they wanted Punk to come back right away to "strike while the iron is hot," but did it have to be Rey that dropped the title to Cena?

Its baffling, but then again I don't think they intend to do that match properly.
It was a fantastic match too, and honestly they could still pull it off later with hype.

I'm not sure you can really make a build out of a feud between those two. Who do WWE admit the fans are behind? It's better as a one off match.
Would definitey like a rematch though, both men brought it.

They were hotshotting the f*** out of the Punk angle so that erm... Triple H could have his billion dollar feud with Kevin Nash.

I was totally cool with it for a few reasons:
- I'm glad I got to see it for free. I've never understood people being upset that something wasn't on ppv. I don't want to pay for anything I don't have to.
- I really don't see it as a big money match or feud. I mean, would Cena vs Mysterio really be that big of a deal? I get that they had never faced each other before, but it wasn't like some huge dream match that fans have been dying for.
- I thought it was a good surprise. We thought going in that the main event of the show was Mysterio vs Miz, and instead it opened the show and then we got Rey vs Cena.

Cena and Rey should have headlined Summerslam last year for the vacant title. Give it the big babyface vs. babyface build. With that match hyped for 3-4 weeks Summerslam would surely have done much better than the near all time low number it ended up doing. Then Punk returns after the match to confront Cena just like he did (except a month or so later than it actually went down), setting up their rematch for Night of Champions to determine the true champion. So basically everything stays the same except things are a little less rushed and they get a big Summerslam number out of it.

No Kevin Nash involvement necessary. No Alberto Del Rio cash in necessary. They basically wasted about 9 months worth of angles in about 6 weeks. |

Looking back on it with what we know now Rey was (shockingly) injured and leaving to get surgery soon and no one knew if he'd be back. The week after he lost it back to Cena, they had a meaningless tag match with him and Morrison against Awesome Truth, the week after Miz "injured" him, Summerslam he was in a meaningless 6 man tag and then on the next RAW, ADR put him out for a year.

I really don't think it could have done any worse though. I think 1996 is the only Summerslam to do worse than last year's. As good as their matches always are, Punk-Cena had just been done a month before on a B show. Summerslam is supposed to be the second biggest show of the year. I mean, you'd never see a Wrestlemania headlined by a match that happened at Elimination Chamber/No Way Out the month before. |

The whole thing was confusing. WWE's booking after MITB made 0 sense to me whether it be The Summer of Punk, Cena/Del Rio, HHH/Punk/Nash, or even Awesome Truth.

Late 80s/early 90s WWF turned me off as a child due to plethora of squash matches. It wasn't until the Raw/Nitro era that I tuned back into wrestling cause *gasp* they were delivering great matches on TV. What the IWC seems to forget that ad revenue trumps PPV buys (though merchandise is still king). |

I didn't have a problem with it. I remember the Raw thread for the week before that show being filled with comments about how Punk not being there was a mistake. Saving him for Summerslam would've been a HUGE misstep.

Its a headscratcher as to why they put it on free TV, but the more i thought about it, the more I realised,
I SAW CENA VS MYSTERIO FOR THE TITLE ON FREE TV AND IT WAS FREAKING EPIC. Seriously, one of if not the best free TV match of 2011.

because it's not really a match you can build to a PPV on, at least not in my opinion.
