I got a netflix recently and got to watch to see two films on my wanting to see list: The Video Dead and The Stuff. The Video Dead - Flawed, but not without it's charm. The zombies were scary and the initial premise were good. The plot deals with a tv that sends zombies from the movie world to the real world. Where it fell apart for me was the acting and overall atmosphere. I'm not sure if the movie wanted to be comedy or horror, but it kind of failed at both. Big props to the film for {Spoiler} killing children and male lead. The Stuff - I liked this one. Basically the film is about this new ice cream product called the Stuff that's both delicious and mind/body altering. With the script written by Larry Cohen I knew it couldn't fail. The acting is pretty good, but I couldn't buy Paul Sorvino as the general. Too many times watching Goodfellas I'm guess. Still it's worth checking out. If anyone knows of other good movies on the netflix queue let me know. UPDATE: Okay I just got done watching The Innkeepers and I have a question regarding the ending... {Spoiler} I was reading about the film on wikipedia and it's says Claire's spirit appears faintly at the end. I didn't see Claire at all. Just an empty room and then the door shutting. Did anyone see Claire's spirit at the end?

I dig THE STUFF. Garrett Morris's mouth getting all giant and crazy looking creeps me out.
Oh, and as a belated birthday present, one of my best friends got me the double feature of BLACULA and SCREAM, BLACULA, SCREAM!

Caught The Raven last night and highly enjoyed it. Critics by and large napalmed it, but I don't see what the glaring problems are. Cusack turns in his usual solid performance, it's got humor in just the right dose, and the flick doesn't wuss out in the blood-and-guts aspect. The "Pit and the Pendulum" scene is VERY cringe-worthy. I'd give it a very solid *** 1/2 out of ****.

I kinda want to see THE RAVEN. I might have to check out the Redbox one of these days and see if I can rent it. My most recent horror flick viewing was the French film HAUTE TENSION (released in America as HIGH TENSION) (2003). I had already seen the film previously, so I knew the twist ending, and was aggravated by it when I first saw the film. But, sometimes when you watch a film with a twist ending a second time, you pick up clues to that twist ending better, you get a better understanding of certain events, and you look at the film in a new light. With this flick, it pretty much kills all the "tension" of the title. {Spoiler}The whole movie is a cat and mouse game between a young woman and a big burly creep who has kidnapped her best friend. But then we find out that the woman kidnapped her best friend, and the creep was some bulls*** she made up. So I'm watching a woman try to avoid being caught by a guy that isn't really there for 90 minutes. I'll give the film some respect for special effects by Giannetto De Rossi, who frequently collaborated with Lucio Fulci back in the day. And the film seems to have led the way for more French horrors, like FRONTIER(S) and MARTYRS (which, I haven't seen either of them, but I've heard good things about). But, HAUTE TENSION itself doesn't do anything for me, despite being overall a well- made movie. 1.5 stars out of 5.

I know I've been up everybody's ass about the Evil Dead remake, but if you haven't seen the NYCC footage, they finally released it as the official red band trailer. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoziF8HTcagNo embed for this one. Pretty gnarly and definitely NSFW.

I watched the original Mummy from 1932 starring Boris Karloff this morning. It was good, but I was really hoping that he would have stayed in his original mummy form for longer. I assumed in my head that he stumbled around wrapped in bandages and killed people for more of the movie. Instead of coming back all looking like Abe Vigoda. Not that minded his human form, I just would have liked more evil toilet paper man stumbling around killing people too. But definitely a good watch. Yeah, the films sequels feature much more of what you were looking for. This last week, I also caught the 1959 version with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. This had some good giant stumbly bandaged wrapped guy as the killer moments. Though I also like the idea of the Mummy being a more intelligent and in control villain. Would be cool to see a mix of both.

Just got done watching 28 DAYS LATER, roughly a week away from the 10th anniversary of it's first hitting British theaters. I don't have a full-blown review, just some thoughts I wanted to throw out there:
It's amazing to me that the most haunting images of the film are the wide open English countryside and the cityscape. They're beautiful because they're tranquil, but they're tranquil because all of the people have died. It's a bit of a chilling thought to process.
As part of that blend of tranquil beauty and nihilistic horror, the film has an almost soothing dream-like quality to it. I'm not sure if I can fully explain it, but something about the textures on display in the digital photography felt just slightly surreal in the way that dreams do.
At any rate, the picture is amazing, and while the big 2000s zombie revival has (in my opinion, at least) more than run its course, I do have to admit Danny Boyle started it off very well with this flick. 4.5 stars out of 5.
