So in the old UFC would Jones forfeit the tournament if the wrong guy advanced to his round 2 fight? Different circumstances. In a one night tourney you're(hopefully) prepared to go all night against whoever. Jones was training for a specific fight, and had nothing to gain and everything to lose by taking on a guy he wasn't prepared for. Good lord, Dana really the best spin guy going today. He's already turned his bad preparation into Jones' fault. I think Dana's being really immature. I'm not really a Jon Jones fan but I can't fault him in this situation. I just thought it was kind of funny because my familiarity of UFC is mostly with the first shows.

It took Sonnen stumbling from the back fist for Silva to get an advantage as Sonnen had dominated the fight up until that point. Sonnen is a points fighter and shouldn't be trying spinning back fists though. Jones should also have taken the fight as he's representing the company as a champion. He was fight ready. For Dan Henderson. Not for Chael Sonnen. Him taking the fight would have basically been him putting up everything he earned against a guy who's done.....what, exactly? Lost two title matches, got a disputable win over Bisping, and one solid win over Brian Stann(who?)? How is that a title fight worthy resume? Add that to the fact that Jones would have 8 days(which, at that point, is mostly fight hype interviews) to "prepare" for Sonnen's style, which is radically different to Hendo's, and there is absolutely no upside to him taking the match. Agree completely, aside from Chael's entertaining trash talking, he has done absolutely nothing to deserve a title shot here. Also, all of those fights were MW, he hasn't even fought anyone in LHW yet. While I think Sonnen would have no chance against Jones, there is always the chance of him pulling off what he did against Silva in their first fight. Which is looking better than he should against an unprepared opponent and thus earning a rematch. This way is actually better for UFC and Jones. A deserving opponent gets a shot against Jones and if Sonnen wants a title shot he will have to earn it in the much tougher LHW division.

Well I would be willing to bet that if Jones had actually agreed to take the fight and destroyed Sonnen in the first or second round. The same people who are ragging on Jones for not taking the fight would be bitching about Jones being given an out of shape MW and how the fight sucked.

All Sonnen's done is talk a big game you KNOW he won't back up, so what's the appeal?

I'd ask if you were Sonnen but even he doesn't really believe it. I wouldn't mind hearing what was discussed about Sonnen, but I highly doubt it was "He can shoot and hold you for 25 minutes, so we shouldn't do this," as much as the multiple reasons why Dana actually having the gull to suggest Sonnen as a serious replacement was downright ridiculous. Sonnen didn't deserve a shot. And now, he doesn't get one. If he wants one, he can stop being a whiny child (never) and win a couple fights in the weight division to show he actually deserves one for a reason outside of "Dana really likes him." Jones will defend his title next month against a worthy opponent which is something Chael Sonnen may never be again.

Tentatively scheduled for UFC 154 on November 17th...
HE returns!
Georges St. Pierre got medically cleared for action today, and 11/17 looks to be the date when they'll unify the UFC welterweight championship when he goes against current interim champ, Carlos Condit.

Yeah, but then you have to take into the account that Sonnen is nowhere near as big or as heavy as Jones. Sonnen stays on the outside, he eats a Jones jab. He tries to get inside Jones' reach, then he has to deal with Jones' freakish elbowing ability. Sonnen would have to take Jones to the ground and that is no easy task. Until I see Sonnen fight at LHW and dominate people on the ground like he has in the past, I don't think he's much to worry about for Jones.

Jose Aldo Jr. AND Rampage Jackson both OUT of UFC 153. Dare they, *ahem*, cancel this show too?
