So Tool is metal now? News to me. Some of the genres here are funny. lol It's everyone's own opinion though. I don't know if it has been mentioned or if the op would like them but I don't care, The Acacia Strain. They are awesome! I was pretty sure it was accepted across the board that Tool is a progressive metal band. At least I'd call them that.

Totally not metal. If someone says "suggest me some metal bands" Tool would never be a band that would come to mind. I LOVE Tool and I love metal but to me they aren't the same. I think Primus are totally in their own genre too. Would you consider them Progressive Metal as well? When I think of metal I think of fans throwing up the horns and headbanging. Double bass drum, guitar solos, crazy stuff.

Drone is a metal genre, too, and it's definitely not something you'd really bang your head to. I think Tool has enough elements of metal to consider them as such. Progressive rock would honestly work too, but yeah.

You have a point with drone "metal". Which I don't really listen to. Probably wouldn't even consider it music. lol But I guess that Done Metal usually has growling or screaming vocals which is another thing that could be associated with metal.

3 pages and no mention of Dio?
I guess Black Sabbath kinda counts, but Ronnie James Dio is perhaps one of the greatest vocalists in Metal music. Check out his Black Sabbath / Heaven and Hell stuff, as well as his work with Rainbow, and of course, his own solo career under the "Dio" name.
EDIT: Whoops, I just saw that Dio was mentioned in the first page. But still, check out his body of work with the bands I mentioned before.

A few new ones ( to me anyway).
Not really metal by today's standards but they're a flash straight back to the 80's. I hope my neighbors enjoy them as much as I do. ;D

Ok. This thread has be completely bewildered.
1. How can the OP be "just getting into heavy metal" but already know that he "can't stand death metal"? I see many have assumed that it is because of harsh vocals, but I would like to hear this actual reason.
2. How can anyone in this day in age, not be able to use the internet. There are literally thousands of websites and forums on the net that make up an entire community of metal fans. Not to mention the wonders of youtube. This forum is one of the last places I would ask for metal recommendations.
3. Are people even using this thread? I see many of the FAN's "finest and brightest" have taken upon themselves to show how "metal" their penises are by offering a few lists chock full of metal mediocrity (not everyone), but is there ANYONE who reads these lists or get anything out of them? The OP has hardly participated, not even bothering to say what he likes/dislikes, what he's tried out, or anything. I'd really like to have a reason to invest any sort of effort in threads like these, but typically these threads are list-o'ramas that go nowhere.

And as for the drone metal comment I was going off wikipedia haha I don't know. I don't listen to it. Probably shouldn't be considered metal either then. If there are no vocals, I'd simply lable it "instrumental".

but there's lots of instrumental metal bands. they just don't get attention because some people can't stand music without vocals.

For example, what if a band played thrash metal, but it had no vocals? Would it somehow cease to be thrash just because of the lack of vocals? That doesn't seem right.

I'd really like to have a reason to invest any sort of effort in threads like these, but typically these threads are list-o'ramas that go nowhere. 1. If I was getting into metal for the first time I for one wouldn't delve into death metal as a starting point, much like if a person is getting into Japanese Films I wouldn't suggest they go watch Tokyo Gore Police first, it's an extreme end of the genre. As an aside, does it really matter? As the poster already said he disliked that particular style of metal then it isn't important, especially as good metal music isn't necessarily defined by being only death metal. 2. He is using the internet to come here Perhaps he likes the community here and wants a more casual opinion than what he would get at a metal forum. F.A.N posters (who as wrestling fans) generally like metal, so it's not a huge leap to assume there maybe good suggestions on the subject here. While if you don't know what your looking for Youtube becomes a giant haystack with no magnet to find the needles. 3. He asked for suggestions/ideas which inevitably give way to lists of bands people enjoy that they may think the person asking may like. What exactly were you expecting to find in this thread instead? Long discussion on the finer points of whether Tom Araya or Dave Mustaine are better lead vocalists? I found the thread useful (Heck I bookmarked it for future reference) as I can pick up on bands I may have missed and see if they are worth a listen or not. Plus we seem to have some sub-metal genre debate too, not that I was really aware of whatever kind of music style drone metal is
