That sucks and all, but why would they even bother remaking FFVII with the original code at this point? The game is so incredibly dated, if they were to do the whole remake thing, they might as well just build an entire new engine for it, or use XIII's engine, or something.

Hell, why not wait for the next generation of systems and use the Agni's Philosophy engine for the remake?

Well, all it really means is that they can't re-release it like they have a good amount of their older games.

Honestly, the PC version was the first one I played, and aside from the HORRENDOUS music, there was nothing wrong with it at all. Seeing as they replaced the dreadful PC version music with the original score for that rerelease anyway, I just don't see what too much of the problem is, other than some ineptness on their part.

The ineptness was really my specific point. I DO find it really odd that they are so super against not remaking the game when it would make them a ton of money.

You'd probably would be surprised by how many source codes are lost in video games

I can think of about half a dozen other Final Fantasy games I would rather see remade than VII, so I'm not terribly disappointed about this.
Even so, pretty stupid thing for them to do.

Though, couldn't they get a PSX copy of the game and just work backward?

Though, couldn't they get a PSX copy of the game and just work backward? That's much harder than you'd think. The game was likely optimized to run on playstations, so it was probably coded in a way that the resulting code would be a mess to run on modern computers to the point where it would be nearly useless. Even assuming they can extract the code from the PSX version, they probably can't get it from "PSX Optimized Code" to "Something they can still improve." Not entirely sure how to word this in a way that makes sense.

They've already remade like every final fantasy game... except 7. It's been time for a while. IN fact a new "anthology set" of 7 8 and 9 would be spectacular!

The first four have gotten remakes, and to my knowledge, that's about it. I really want a remake of 6, personally.

Is Square run by the BBC? At least the BBC's junking policies was before rereleasing or even reairing shows wasn't the done thing. This is just pure incompetence.

I believe this is the same studio that when working with some Scandinavian dev company demanded them to FAX them a game's source code.

Why wouldn't they remake the game completely, with the way they do Final Fantasy games now?
Sounds like another excuse to not make something people have been asking for.

They would need the original code more for reference than for anything else, honestly. Nothing from it would make the final cut but it would make organization way easier. Plus it does explain why they don't do HD re-releases. They flat out can't do that.
