And Beefcake being the challenger for the IC title at WMIV. Beefcake was by no means a great wrestler, but his quest to cut Jimmy Hart and HTM's hair was getting crowd reactions that about 95% of the current roster would kill for. I'm also a little confused that the OP describes Strike Force as bland but laments that Martel wasn't being pushed.

I was eight in 1988. In my little mark-brain, everyone was over, the babyfaces were all great people and the heels were all jerks, and I really wanted someone like a Sam Houston or a Hillbilly Jim to put that stinky, nasty Giant or that devious "Million-Dollar Man" in their place. Just as long as the good guys won, that's all I cared about at the time.
Granted, we never went to house shows, and back then a Superstars main event of Bad News Brown vs. Koko B. Ware was as close as you'd get to "superstar vs. superstar" matches like those that dominate TV these days, but it was a great time to be a fan and think it was all real.
I kinda miss those days.....

I don't really have any problems with the 1988 roster myself either. The roster did transition in that some of the rock n' wrestling veterans (Muraco, JYD, Bundy, Orndorff, etc.) were either gone or on their way out and that some of the newer guys (Warrior, Boss Man, The Rockers, etc.) were either phasing themselves in or joined the WWF in 1988.

I loved this roster. The first ones that stopped featuring Hogan were desperate to find an identity and direction, thus I cared not for 1, 2, 3 kid, razor, doink, tatanka, backlund, diesel, Owen hart, yoko, berserker, smoking guns ect.

What is the basis of being "an abysmal roster"? Looks like a lot of guys who could sell tickets to me.
5 former/future WWF champions: Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Bret "Hitman Hart, Randy "Macho Man" Savage.
10 former/future I-C champions: "The Rock" Don Muraco, Tito Santana, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, Davey Boy Smith, Bret "Hitman" Hart, Randy "Macho Man" Savage, The Honky Tonk Man, Ken Patera, Ultimate Warrior, "Ravishing" Rick Rude.
14 former/future Tag Team champions: Andre The Giant, Tito Santana, Nikolai Volkoff, Brutus Beefcake, Davey Boy Smith, Dynamite Kid, Haku, Bret "Hitman" Hart, Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart, Ax, Smash, Dino Bravo, Rick Martel, "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase.
Not to mention that the majority of their wrestlers held top regional or World titles in other territories and could draw money just based on name recognition alone.
The majority of that roster had positions they held and they had a lot of good to great feuds with one another. Shoot, Danny Davis is the weakest guy of the lot, and he drew HUGE heat joining the Hart Foundation. Evil referee-turned-wrestler and they did a tremendous job making him a heel. Even in the SNME Battle Royal from March, fans cheered his specific elimination like crazy, and he was an after-thought by then.
