I just really remember the really awkward backstage promo before some Monster Ball match or something where he had a bag of thumbtacks and started pushing them into his arm, repeatedly.

It went all down hill once that made James Mitchell his abusive dad and brought the whole he murdered someone and he could go to jail bite. If they stuck with James as his mouth piece and Abyss the silience monster he was. He would been great.
Plus if he didn't get out of shape and loss the ablities he has as a good big man wrestler. Now he out of shape can't be taken seriously because he been in so mainly lame storylines. The whole Dr. Stevie made me mad because they made Abyss look like a wuss.

Sadly, Abyss was one of the reasons I started watching TNA. Same here that along with AJ Styles, The X-Division, The Tag Division & Samoa Joe.

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't think he's that bad a talker. His character's a lunatic and he at least knows how to sound like a lunatic.
What killed his effectiveness was his too long run as a big dopey Family Guy loving goofball, and jobbing too much for a company's premiere "monster". Once he turned on Hogan just prior to Immortal's debut, his persona was perfect (although the Janice thing was a bit much).

Another thing that really hurt his credibility was having him job to Kurt Angle in Kurt's first TNA match. Angle kicked out of the Black Hole Slam and beat him handily.

As I recall Abyss even tapped out to the Ankle Lock, and rather quickly at that..... Question, was that the first time Abyss ever submitted? I do know up until roughly that point TNA "Creative" was booking Abyss as an unstoppable monster who was impervious to pain.

He's Mick Foley with zero of the charm and creativity that made Foley great. I've never seen someone make a thumbtack bump mean less than Abyss.

Abyss was one of the best big men around about 5 years ago, but his best days are long behind him. A combination of terrible storylines and him currently being one of the most boring wrestlers on the roster have eroded any interest I ever had.

For what it's worth, he's one of the few non ex-WWE guys most people who are aware of TNA by name only seem to know about. Atleast from my experience with the casual wrestling fans I know.

I remember when I first saw TNA many, many years ago, I thought Abyss was some sort of joke. He just looked very "indie", in that he was such a blatant Kane/Mankind knock-off. I could've totally imagined a promoter booking a card featuring him as "Wrestling Superstar Cane!!".
As for Abyss circa-2011/12, I would actually have him drop the whole "Monster" shtick and just let him be a good big-man wrestler. I would give him 6 months off to heal up, get his teeth fixed, slim down and get healthy, and bring him back without the mask. Let him wrestle as Chris "Abyss" Parks, with the idea being that he's the tenured veteran who's never gotten his due, and now he's out to MAKE people respect him. As was previously mentioned, the Mark Henry build of this past year would be a great blueprint for how you reintroduce an old character as someone new and relevant.
He's one of the most worn-out personas in wrestling, and I just don't see what there is left to do with him in his current faux-Foley role.

He was decent with James Mitchell as the lumbering, silent, monster; but that's a dude that should never, ever talk.
And if you do let him talk, he definitely should NEVER lose the mask. Dude looks way too friendly and normal without it.

Yeah, after his feud with Christian...things got bad. Bad booking, out of shape, his body being beaten up from all the abuse he puts it though, and so on. It's a shame that AJ and him have given so much of their bodies so many times to TNA...and have very little to show for it.
I'll always remember Alex Shelley & him together, ah, fun times from the FSN era.

he can go but they've just completely killed his character with all the crap they've given him over the years starting with James Mitchell as his father

Yea, I always thought Abyss was talented. TNA has just ruined him with their booking. I don't see how the OP can say that TNA has tried to make him a star. Unless you call that crap they did to him when Hogan came in "trying".
