The WWE did suck during those times, however. I think part of it also was that younger men would feel uncomfortable cheering the 'Boy Toy' character. He wasn't really a superstar with whom you could have any street cred buying into. Male One: What does that say on your t-shirt Male Two: Shawn Michaels - Sexy Boy Male One: Um...so you like this guy? Male Two: Yeah he's the Heart Break Kid. The Boy Toy! Male One: Uh-huh...*moves away* I remember watching Bret Hart's DVD a long time ago and there was a clip during the documentary about advertisement and this guy shilling Shawn Michaels' merchandise. Sunglasses, poster, a t-shirt, I think to myself, if a boy were to have all of that, I bet he would be picked on. The T-shirt and poster look like something girls would use. I would have to say his shirts from after his comeback were a lot better. It didn't help that Vince's commentary towards Shawn then was...bizarre. In a Goldust sort of way. Like Vince would freakout and practically egg Shawn on when he would tease pulling down his trunks and getting naked in the ring. How Vince thought that that character presented in that way would get over with a male audience it beyond me. They tried to adjust him into a scrappy pitbull fighting champion, but by then it was too late.

Shawn diddnt want to put Austin over, he got forced to, then he went off in a huff, then decided to stop wrestling to a) heal up nagging injuries (that probably wernt as bad as they made out) and b) because Austin was the face of the company now and Shawn diddnt want to share no spotlight. he would have returned earlier but then The Rock became the face of the company, funny how Shawn Returned around the time The Rock and Austin pretty much quit being full time isnt it? but i wasnt there, Im not Shawn, I dont know the real reason, but this is how I always thought of it That's totally how I always saw it! And I never bought the whole born again crap neither, I think Shawn never really changed, and when Hogan outpoliticked him in 2005 he showed his true personality. But after a 4 years hiatus he was no more the company guy and got used to it. That's why he was more focused on matches quality than winning titles. I think him and Vince made a deal. Stop being a political prick and f***ing up my locker room and I will hype you to death so the people will consider you a All Time Great.

I'd be willing to bet that he had one of those sweet Lloyd's of London insurance policies and he cashed that bad boy in due to his back injury as well.

My guess, he really was injured, and Vince told him to try and sort out his personal problems while he was out.

I remember reading back in 2000 that Shawn had a match with one of his students. Remember, back then, he had his own promotion as well, which I think was linked to his school. It was called TWA (Texas Wrestling Alliance). I read that it was considered his "last match" at the time, only to come back again two years later. To the ring, I mean.
If only someone filmed some footage of that. I would have liked to have seen that match.
