In the past, I have read some threads on some boards for movies on IMDB of people being baffled over a movie being on the Top 250. I remember when I was a teenager, I used to think that was such a credible list of being the all-time greatest movies. Same with the Bottom 100 being a list of the worst movies of all time.
However, I read later on that usually any film that gets nominated to be on either list is usually based on user votes. Back in 2007, I remember Superbad and The Simpsons Movie actually being put on the Top 250, believe it or not. Same with how back in 2009, The Hangover was on the Top 250. In the end, their statuses of being on that list were because of user votes.

It's all user votes, so I think it's a credible indication of how IMDB users see movies.
And that tends to mean that major releases will be on there, as will older movies that are widely regarded as classics. I think you get a lot of fanboyism, and blind hatred, that leads to things being ranked as they are.

I think Flick Chart's rankings seem to be less likely to be affected by new movies. IE
Inception IMDB=14 Flick Chart=125

Shawshank Redeption is #1 so nope In fact I find 5 of the top 10 to be extremely boring movies.

Considering some of those message boards there I wouldn't trust that list very much.

It's a good list of films people like in general.
1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994) 2.The Godfather (1972) 3.The Godfather: Part II (1974) 4.Pulp Fiction (1994) 5.The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) 6.12 Angry Men (1957) 7.Schindler's List (1993) 8.The Dark Knight (2008) 9.The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) 10.Fight Club (1999)
The Top Ten feels like if I asked a hundred people to name 5 films they really like I would expect all these films to appear at some point.
Having said that it is also a very manly list, especially that top ten: You have 3 Gangster films, 1 Western, A Law Court Drama full of men, a fantasy adventure with lots of battles, a brooding superhero, a dark thriller, a wartime film and a male prison escape.
So is it credible? Kind of if you think about the demographic that mostly vote on it.
The bottom 100 is credible though, especially if you just take the films that have 10,000 votes or more as the realistic bottom 10

Not really.
There are currently four films in the Top 250 from 2012 (Dark Knight Rises, Avengers, Looper and Moonrise Kingdom.) I've seen all four of them and I really liked them all, but let's see how they hold up over time before you anoint them among the greatest ever.
Based on that alone, I have trouble accepting this list's credibility.

I still remember back in 2002, Spider-Man made the Top 250.

With the top 250, I find it's a good indicator for film quality as long as the film is over five years old. Acclaimed new releases get hyperbolic ratings all the time, then another boost with the home release. However, once the hype has worn off, people rewatch it and rate it less fervently than when it was new and fresh, so five years is usually a good indicator of how well a film's holding up.

No because the vote totals vary wildly. You have a top list that includes The Shawshank Redemption at #1 with 840,695 votes and The Kid at #129 with 26,682. Far too big of a gap.

I think it's credible enough, or at least more credible than people seem to make it out to be. I like that there is more inclusiveness, since the general public get to vote. The only problem, like mentioned already, is the fanboyism and blind hatred.
In fact, there's a story on how The Shawshank Redemption displaced The Godfather at #1. Apparently, The Dark Knight fanboys went on a mission to put that movie on #1 by voting down The Godfather (then #1).

The list is a good indicator of what the most popular brocentric american films from the 70s onward are .Although I think if you are trying to get a teen interested in film as a hobby maybe gearing them to that list to wet the pallet is not a bad place to start. Beyond that it omits a ton of essential movies for a film buff.

I think their list is just as credible as any other.
Really, is there a more credible way than "user votes" to determine a list?

It's a credible list of popular opinion.
If you want a list of critical opinion, you go elsewhere.
If you want a list of your own taste, you make your own list.
All depends what you are looking for, but essentially, a popularist list, it's as credible as any others.

Most of the Bottom 100 are films I've never heard of, and the ones I have heard of definitely deserve to be there...........but Holy shit, the Top 250 list is an absolute joke!!!
