So assuming Generico isn't going to be signing any company deal and from all accounts it appears Lethal is in line for a title run, it does beg the question though witch scenario is the better alternative.
1 - Generico beats Steen, then drops the title to Lethal in the same night, or if not then the next show.
2 - Steen retains, then drops it to Lethal soon afterwards.
At least with the first alternative you get Generico's big title win, and possibly a new and fresh heel Jay Lethal. Though if you want try to keep Lethal face, the second alternative appears to be the way to go. Although I really think he needs some sort of drastic change.
The only other options would be to not involve Lethal at all, which with everything they've built up with him would probably be a mistake at this point. Have him run in and cost either guy, which I would cheapen the match. Or make it a triple threat match, which would also cheapen the match.

Generico is more over than Lethal mostly due to not being around every show. Lethal currently gets the biggest baby face reactions out of the roster. If Generico stayed, their reactions would be at the same level. Generico being away for so long edges him out.
Fans know ROH won't give Generico the belt.
Honestly I don't blame them. He works for Gave, the Kenny King incident, the hype for his matches usually rely on how good his opponent is at promos (ie Steen). I love Generico but he isn't getting the belt.
Lastly I think we should have more faith in them protecting the title. Look at the history of the belt, it is one of the most protected titles in wrestling. If Cornette was in charge maybe, but seeing how Delirious is a wrestler, he knows and respects the title.
Anyway like I said, if you want to continue this discussion I'd gladly do so, if not then let's agree to disagree. Different strokes different folks.

They really cannot do scenario 2 because they made Lethal not being able to face Steen a key part of Cornette's write off. Yeah, it's wrestling and they can ignore it but it'd be worse than any Russo change ever, IMO.

I can't see a Lethal heel turn. He is their top baby face, a heel turn would be insanely rushed and likely not over

They could easily spin it by claiming that regardless of what Steen wanted and was promised, Lethal still has a contractually guaranteed world title shot from winning SOTF which takes precedence. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch, and also helps legitimise the tournament more.

I think Lethal is great and should absolutely be in the world title picture BUT, I'd like to see a feel-good Generico reign first. Give Generico at least a good 2-3 months. Then Generico loses to someone who is just an unstoppable force, like Steen again or Rhyno. Then, after a month or two of dominance, Lethal dethrones them, and we get a lengthly Lethal reign. Who's more of an unstoppable force than 'Unbeatable' Jay Lethal? The man who only loses in title matches. Nobody is, but my point is that the emotional ovation for Lethal eventually emerging victorious in a brutal match against someone hated and monstrous is more appealing to me than going right from feel-good victory for Generico to someone as beloved as Lethal taking it right off of someone as also-beloved as Generico.

I wrote that in tongue in cheek. I know what you meant but couldn't pass up the joke.

You know, I didnt think there was a way for ROH to become duller than it was during the clone saga with Davey, Roddy and Eddie, but a Jay Lethal title run?
Oh boy.
