I have been a Foley fan since 1996 when he debuted as Mankind and have loved him ever since. But recently on this board and news stories, he comes across as kind of a jerk in real life. Things that I have read in last few weeks/months include:
In his books when talking about the charity work, he constantly brags about what he has done and repeatedly throws it in the readers face how awesome he is.
Going to Vince and trying to get The Rock fired in 1997.
Complaining to Vince about how much money Mero is on.
Rumours about how he stopped Ambrose getting called up.
Plus, this might be petty but I always found it awkward a guy his age constantly talking about the divas and posing in pictures with them.
Dunno I just sense the jolly old Mick we see on TV isnt the same guy he is when cameras arent on him.

A rumor is just a rumor. It's best not to judge a person unless you know for sure.

The reason I have gone off him is the on screen character that WWE have had him portray in this current run has been appalling. I don't know if any of the things you list there are true, but I have read all of his books and was not struck by him going on and on about charity work just for self promotion.
I was disappointed when I met him at a meet and greet however. It was a TNA one in Glasgow and we were first in line. I got my girlfriend to take a pic of me beside him and he looked very displeased and I heard him saying to the staff to "move them on a bit quicker."
Sure maybe he was having a bad day, but that did shatter my illusions of him a little.

I don't really have any sense of him as a person, but I felt like his performance ability had gone way downhill when I saw him giving long aimless bad promos in TNA in 2010. I hoped that it was just TNA and that I'd enjoy him again when he returned to WWE but I really haven't. I don't blame him that much because all the material he's been given has been awful. I liked him up through his stuff in 2008, the last segment with Edge was really cool.

The charity work bragging was really annoying in his last book.

Foley as a wrestler was amazing, but there's no use for him anymore is my problem with him.

I can only judge Mick on the small amount of time I've spent with him in person, and he seemed cool to me.

It's tough. Mick Foley was a hero to me, especially as an awkward 13 year old seeing this guy who was not a typical wrestler, finally win the WWE title, it was so great. But yeah, Foley looks like he put on a ton of weight, but it might have to do with him being in so much pain and not being able to do much.

I dunno if it's just how it appears, or me becoming old and jaded, but seriously Foley has become smug.

The charity work bragging was really annoying in his last book. Thankfully he put up that wrestling meter at the start of every chapter on that book.

Foley has always been smug. The guy has always felt he's more important than he actually is. He comes off as one of those guys who does charity work to make himself feel good as opposed to actually making a difference. I was actually happy when he quit WWE a few years ago, since I felt he completely outwore his welcome. The guy is definitely good on the mic when he wants to be, but those promos only go so far when you cut them all the time. I could do without ever seeing him perform in a match again, hell it worked perfectly after his Orton feud...he didn't need to perform ever again. I still love his work as the original Mankind, but his later crazy bump stuff never appealed to me since it became the norm, I knew what to expect, therefore I was unimpressed.
And yes, the Mero thing always annoyed me. There's other ways to go about telling your boss you deserve more rather than throwing someone under the bus, let alone a guy who never really seemed to give anyone any problems.

Happened to me when he went to TNA and talked his way into every major role, while bringing nothing to TNA. The stuff since, the horrible promos, the fawning over every Diva, the bragging about his his charity work and holding it over peoples' heads, to basically being a damned whore, only showing up when he has something to plug, I don't want to see him until he gives his HOF speech and then never again.

Mick had worked with Mero for several years. He felt he knew what Mero was worth vs him.

I don't read into the rumors much and outside of that someone like Foley I don't really see how he is in real life simply because when I was a kid all I saw was him on tv. All I saw was the character so really everything else isn't as important. We don't even know if any of those things are true.

I've never heard the "tried to get Rock fired" story before. I think the OP is misinterpreting an anecdote from Foley's first book where another wrestler, not Vince, asked Mick about Rock after they had a match in early 1997. Foley said Rocky just didn't have it and the office might be wise to let him go. It was more an example of co-workers talking amongst themselves about the "new guy" than Foley trying to get Rock fired. Foley also admitted he was 100% wrong in that initial assessment.
