asked a while ago about a shoot wrestling promotion. Here's a similiar but quite different idea. how abou a promotion ran a bit like the old AWA, where they keep kayfabe fully, and treat wrestling as a sport rather than entertainment, but taken a few steps beyond. I'm thinking VERY few angles and storylines that aren't centered on rankings or titles, only a handful of gimmicks, a comprehensive ranking by actuall won-loss records of every wrestler, title shots based on ranking rather than storylines, less drama, and more action.
Aside from a totally legit pro wrestling promotion, this would be my dream sport. We'd get back to the roots of why we all watch anyway, the wrestling.
Sure, the show would still come first, but subtely. The booking would be at the same time easier and more complex, as you'd have to arrange proper win loss records to set up matches. The matches could still be spectacular while being realistic. just think it would be totally excellent.
what do you guys think? Good idea? Bad idea? What do you like or dislike about it?

I don't know - "success" is a weird thing when it comes to something like EVOLVE, because it's clearly a niche thing as pro wrestling isn't as hot as it once was, so something like that isn't going to do huge business exactly since it only caters to a portion of the wrestling audience; but I think something like that needs to exist for those fans, because people like the OP will support a product like that. It's more about promotion and figuring out revenue streams, really. But a product like that, while it'll never be as big as WWE, TNA, or even really ROH, will always have it's supporters, although it is a niche thing. While I'm also a "storylines" guy, that's something I can recognize. |

I like the idea but I also think it would need more than what you've currently outlined to be a major success instead of something that was small and just catering to a niche market. I would personally keep it kayfabed with the rankings and stories being told out in front of the crowd however stylize the whole show with a fight club gimmick. Have it come out of a nightclub or something along those lines and have it very character heavy in that everybody is different however not in the sense that they're bin men or masked monsters or clowns. I think it would also be good to tap into the MMA demographic, while keeping the wrestling intact, have a few KO wins and a lot more of the technical and hard hitting stuff that isn't really showcased on television. Then of course have the big throwdown stiff as hell brawls filled with holy shit moments end the show because who doesn't love that stuff. I'm kinda thinking Wrestling Society X with more Kayfabe and longer and more entertaining matches. |

Worked shoot style promotions existed years ago, before the rise of MMA, to give wrestling fans the option of following something that seemed more like a real sport than typical pro wrestling does. Nowadays, if someone wanted to follow a real fighting sport, they can just watch MMA. Why would anyone want to watch worked MMA? They would just watch the real thing. Pro wrestling is a storyline based worked fight presentation. The storylines and angles are what makes pro wrestling different than boxing or MMA. Take the storylines and angles out of pro wrestling, and it would just make it a worked version of what people could see for real in other fighting sports.

First thing that came to mind was Evolve. I liked how early on the title of their shows always had the main event in the title like Evolve 1: Ibushi vs Richards or Evolve 5: Sawa vs Danielson. I think it had a good idea that was something different, but then a lot of guys who fit that style pulled out, and Gabe was struggling to manage 2 feds, so they got mixed in together and it got muddled.

Actually Boxing and MMA have storylines and angles. Just not to the level of pro wrestling.

Yea, I'm with the OP. It's not like there would be no promos or angles, they would just not be so god damn ridiculous and would actually have a point. I like indy wrestling but I would like that style even more if there were high production values and a big crowd for every show. I also prefer the weekly show/monthly PPV format to having to order DVD's and I'm still hesitant about iPPV. I mean, I personally have a big HD monitor and a PC in my living room, I just have an awful memory of watching Wrestlemania 19 on WWE.com on a 56k modem.
The easiest way for us to get a fed like that would be if WWE or TNA would just cut the bullshit. A new promotion popping up with this approach and really taking off seems unlikely despite how simple it sounds.

It wouldn't make money.
If people want legitimate sport they will watch UFC, Boxing, Martial Arts, Olympic Wrestling etc etc.
If a wrestling promotion w ent that way you go from competing with wrestling companies to competing with all those other companies.
People know wrestling is a work so nobody would care about rankings or storylines about rankings because it's all fixed.
Not to mention wrestling is loved for being over the top and "silly" an idea like this may of worked in the 70's or 80's but not today.

Like many have said, why would someone who cares about rankings and logical title shots watch fake sports when their are tons of real sports that do that? Maybe I'm misinterpreting your original point. I think the best way to go is to have pro wrestling with all the goofy characters and over-the-top storylines, but it is produced and covered by the commentators like its a real sport. I'm thinking like WWF 1991-92 with their Fox NFL Sunday style Primetime wrestling debate panel or many of the territories in the 80s. I think that's the problem today. The crazy storylines are not the problem. It's the tongue in cheek promos and commentary that takes you out of that universe and shoves it down your throat that it's fake, leading me to go "Yeah it is. Why am I watching this stupid crap where even the characters on the show know its fake? What else is on?" |
