Whatta waste that was, eh?
The whole story was about Punk getting an Anaconda Vice on Holly, and instead of going the logical conclusion, Holly hits the Alabama Slam, wins, and...goes nowhere with it.
I know it's not Punk's first loss in WWECW, but they could have done this a little better, right?

I think a news item about people thinking he needed to pay his dues had broken out so they threw away his undefeated streak with little fanfare.

I'm pretty sure it was his first loss on ECW. I had only just joined the board and I still remember the angry thread about it.

Well if you want to get technical, Punk WAS first eliminated in the Extreme Elimination Chamber, but the loss to Holly was his first singles loss under his unbeaten streak.
^ What he said. Ninja'd.

Wasn't it some bullshit about Holly being on TV longer and therefore a bigger star?

Wasn't it some bulls*** about Holly being on TV longer and therefore a bigger star? Pretty much. I also heard it was most of the road agents seemed to like Holly and wanted to give him a push on ECW, and the whole Punk being a "Paul Heyman guy". As has been pointed out, this loss came just after Heyman left WWE, so they clearly felt no need to keep CM Punk, one of the few things about the new ECW that people actually seemed to like, strong. And thus began the many "CM Punk has nuclear heat backstage/attitude problem" stories perpetuated by the NEWZ sites.

Have to give Punk this, kind of amazing he was consistently ECW's most popular guy given they did everything they could to bring him down while he was there.

Maybe this was supposed to lead to Spacecore Holly.

A bit weird to have it go that way. Absolutely meaningless in the long run too. Punk was just fine.
Kinda miss that old bastard though.

Poor Punk. He never fully recovered from that complete burial.

Punk was also pinned by Matt Striker on ECW once. I'm amazed he's never brought that up on commentary.

I remember being really annoyed with that. Why give someone such an impressive winning streak and then kill it dead with a lackluster match against freaking hardcore holly of all people? Granted, punk was just fine in the end but it was still a boneheaded move.

Ahhhh.............I remember being in the ECW thread that night when Punk was pinned by Holly. Tons of people were pissed and believed this was the end of Punk in WWE. The memories.

Those "Best in World" shirts would have outsold "Hulk Rules" by now, if only Punk had won that match.

Granted, punk was just fine in the end but it was still a boneheaded move. I'm surprised at this point that Punk hasn't done a promo about the success he's had compared to others from ECW. "So whatever happened to that deadpan monster that tried to keep his girlfriend from having the hots for me? And speaking of the beard, whatever happened to that Mike Knox guy it was attached to?"
