I take you back to April 2012 and a Hogan interview with the NYTimes: “If you wanted a quick fix, right now, you would put the belt on Jeff Hardy,” Hogan said. “That would fix a bunch of stuff right now, but that is not working backwards from where we need to be. Right now, to work to that point, the belt needs to stay with Bobby Roode. He’s a guy who we are bringing up and is a constant. As we build him up it’s like a volcano that ready to explode.” www.nypost.com/p/entertainment/tv/hogan_set_to_lead_tna_wrestling_Do3zzGXcFS2hjXUVV742zKBasically, Aries was not Roode and the ratings weren't growing so....

The ratings don't grow regardless. It's TNA.

I think Aries works way better as the cocky, smug heel than the heroic face and he didn't defend the title enough imo. I would love to see Aries get another run with the belt, but I think 2013 should be the year of Christopher Daniels, have him beat AJ tonite at Final Resolution then somehow end up number one contender and eventually win the belt. Daniels does Aries act, except much better.

He just didn't have heels to work with. I thought Aries made a great bad ass face. I prefer him as a heel, but I would have preferred for TNA to have stayed the course and turned other people heel to face Aries. Aries vs heel Angle, AJ, Joe, and maybe a returning JJ could have gotten them through several PPV's. Exactly. Aries went through the two biggest heels on the roster and TNA had no plans for life after that. The biggest remaining heels were a group where none of them were ready/distinct enough for a title shot and even if there were, Aries, as big of a fan of him as I am, he's no 90s Sting, even as a face he's too much of a prick to be the lead face in the fightback against Aces and 8's.,

I think part of the problem was the match at Destination X. If TNA did want Roode to stay on as champion then they booked themselves into a massive corner there because if Aries didn't win then it could have done major damage to the X Division, giving fans the impression that X Division wrestlers weren't as good as the guys holding the world title and thus weren't worth paying money or attention to. Maybe TNA felt pressured to do it because Aries was really hot with the crowd at the time and they wanted to strike while the iron was hot even though they didn't fully think it through as to what would happen afterwards.
