Oh yeah I forgot the end of the world was tomorrow. For some reason I'm not too worried... Edit: The supposed times the world's supposed to end if anyone wants to keep track www.timeanddate.com/countdown/maya

It's all down to misconception. Just like Y2K, people jumped to conclusions instead of doing research and finding out more information about the subject. People assumed the Mayans predicted the end of the world, because it was mentioned in books, TV shows and other forms of media. The problem with misconception, is that it will overshadow the obvious.

Right, same reason you'll see FBook hoaxes of all flavors shared immediately, when 30 seconds of research should end the misinformation.

What's funny is that the Myan calender technically ended a few years ago because they didn't know about leap years.

What's funny is that the Myan calender technically ended a few years ago because they didn't know about leap years. yeah I shared a picture on FB talking about that. Also did people of Mayan decent, or experts of the culture actually come out and say that the Mayans never predicted the end of the world? And wasn't the world also supposed to end last year according to some nutjob?

Also did people of Mayan decent, or experts of the culture actually come out and say that the Mayans never predicted the end of the world? Yes, tons of them. They even discovered the calender extends past the 2012 date, with no end in sight. In other words...they've discovered the obvious.

True, but this one at least was the most publicized "end of the world" event of them all. Between 2012 the movie, that reference in the Treehouse of Horror episode this year and even Chris Jericho's return stuff hinted at it. You would think this one in particular would be "the" defeat for all the conspiracy theorists out there. I'd say Y2K was equally, if not more popular than the 2012 stuff considering there was a possibility of an actual problem if computers weren't tuned, but even that being a flop didn't stop the nutjobs. This, Y2k was a much bigger deal... and was at least started somewhere in the realm of reality. Not to mention the Mayan Calender doesn't take into account things like leap years. Also has anyone asked the Mayans what they think of 2012 yet? I mean they are still around...

Am I the only one kind of hoping that the end of the world is REALLY supposed to happen, but the guys putting boxes upon boxes of Jell-O pudding on top of the Mayan tower would save the world?

Chris Jericho had the whole "Y2J" gimmick to piggyback off of the Y2K panic and then "The End of The World As You Know it" vignettes for Jericho's second return. So that's something both Y2K and 12/21/12 have in common......Man, Jericho was kind of a fear monger!

What are the origins of the 2012 doomsday predictions? I mean, if the Mayans who are still alive say that their people never predicted the end of the world and technically, the Mayan calendar has already expired due to leap years and such, where did the doomsday predictions come from?

^^^If you go by Earth Defense Force 2017, we will be invaded by Giant Ants and Robots. What are the origins of the 2012 doomsday predictions? I mean, if the Mayans who are still alive say that their people never predicted the end of the world and technically, the Mayan calendar has already expired due to leap years and such, where did the doomsday predictions come from? It goes all the way back to the 80s, when New Age culture was on the rise. It all happened during the Harmonic Convergence, which was a event where people around the world, all meditated at once. According to someone called José Argüelles, the event began the countdown to December 21st 2012, which all the evils of the world will end with the birth of a new sun and new earth. In other words, it's all New Age stuff.
