I was watching the NwO DVD and all of a something clicked. Is the Shield The WWE's nWo? The similarites are uncanny, from outsiders to the promo styles. Even that feeling of "I know they're supposed to be heels but they're so damn cool" All they need is a Hulk hogan. Could this be The Cena Turn?

Ambrose / Rollins / Reigns don't have nearly the kind of starpower that Hogan / Hall / Nash had. Those guys were recognizable faces that were already superstars. Outside of the indys/NXT, nobody has a clue who these guys are.

Outside of the indys/NXT, nobody has a clue who these guys are. Granted, although with the net probably more people were aware of them. And as for hogan, I don 't think we've seen him yet. It'd have to be a "shocking" turn. That's why I brought up Cena.

Nah, the NWO formula and it's variations have never abided by the seven-year rule. Both WCW and WWE were re-doing it two years of it's original run, and they (along with TNA) have been doing it ever since, most recently with the Nexus. Although to the credit of the Nexus, they mixed it with the Natural Born Thrillers angle from WCW where it's a bunch of rookies debuting who it's acknowledged aren't necessarily "outsiders" in that they're from WWE's farm system, but they're not on the main roster and they're taking things into their own hands by throwing out the format and taking over the show, an approach they seem to be following with the Shield, while giving them more of a gimmick (the "justice" motive). At this point, there's so many permutations on what made the NWO work (stable of guys who show up and wreck shit, company-controlling heel stable, unholy alliance between powerful forces stable) that the Shield have more in common with angles influenced by the NWO than they do with the NWO themselves.

I too, when watching that DVD, thought of the Shield.
Also, Has John Cena not been attacked by the shield yet? Odd, mr. gets attacked by everyone, not attacked by the shield.

I think they're gonna have a hard time keeping these guys heels. The reaction at TLC shows that.

They haven't attacked any heels, have they? That'd bring on a better nWo comparison.
The Nexus was more of an nWo than the Shield has been, because the Shield hasn't united face and heel against them (yet).

I hope it just stays as the three of them administering justice without any new members, higher powers or hidden agendas.

Interestingly enough, their motivations are so different (enforcing a sense of honor/justice vs dominating a company due to entitlement/total lack of honor), the two groups would probably be at war with each other if they existed at the same time.

The makeup is different (established veterans vs. young rookies), but the circumstances are similar-the nWo could be seen as an invasion from the WWF, while the Shield could be seen as an invasion from various indies (ROH, CZW, Dragon Gate).
Cena turning could be the moment to propel them into nWo-like status, but they blew that whole angle with the Nexus (who in my mind could have been the next nWo, but was screwed up royally).

Except Reigns never wrestled anywhere besides WWE and they mentioned they were from NXT.

I think they're gonna have a hard time keeping these guys heels. The reaction at TLC shows that. You pretty much could use them like APA, though instead of being for hire, they could step in to fight guys who they think are bullies or otherwise unjust.
