So quickly?
I quit watching after about the 14th straight week of the same Spirit Squad run-in mosh to end Raw. It seemed like the same thing over and over for months and months and months. Where were they going to go with a group of male cheerleaders?
They were just a 'fresh' alternative to Vince's Stooges -- and they didn't stay fresh for long.

They were glorified jobbers, Vince flavor of the month.

The 'Squad lasted a good chunk of the year. Quite frankly, they were getting stale, time to split them up.

Kinda sucks that the only one who became anything out of that group was Ziggler. Everyone thought Kenny would be the breakout star..

I could've swore they were around for like 2 years or am I crazy? Their run lasted 10 months (January-November 2006).

It was a good gimmick. It would still work now, if the team had an actual structure to it (solo guy, tag team, hotshot, diva/female cheerleader, manager/coach etc....)

Kenny had an awesome Leg Drop. That is all. I read this in Raw vs Smackdown commentary style. Kenny...had an awesome....leg drop.

They lasted just as long as they needed to. Any longer would have been overkill.

I believe they wanted to give Kenny a run at the top. Hence why they had him feuding (and beating) Ric Flair. By that point, beating Ric Flair didn't really mean that much and Kenny never went anywhere.

I've never understood the 'in hindsight' love the SS gimmick gets. It very nearly destroyed 5 young careers.

Can't believe only Ziggler ever came out of thst group. Expected more to have a decent career.

I hated them ever since they debuted. I hated them even more the night they won the Tag Team Titles from Big Show & Kane.....THE BIG SHOW & KANE!!! REALLY?!?! not to mention it was the night after Wrestlemania 22, and they held onto those titles and barely defended them. The only tag title match I remember them defending them was against The Highlanders at Unforgiven and then against Piper & Flair at Cyber Sunday.
So basically, they win the Tag Titles April 3rd, 2006....and never defended the tag titles until Unforgiven 2006 which took place September 17th. So they held onto those titles for 5 Months before they finally put those titles up on the line and then lost them November 5th, 2006. So they pretty much held those titles from April to November and only defended the belts TWICE!
I hate those types of reigns where the champion never defends the title as much as they should. The same way as Santino won the US Title in March and lost it in August while only defending the title a total of 5 times before he lost it.
Why the hell do they do that to the titles?

It was an awful gimmick that was out-of-touch and just odd in 2006, yet clearly Vince had a raging boner for it. Something like the Spirit Squad would have maybe worked in the '80s and early '90s, when wrestling gimmicks usually involved a secondary career, but why would male cheerleaders, who also wrestle, do their male cheerleader acts when wrestling when wrestling isn't a sport that has cheerleading in the first place?
I'm also never fond of the Freebirds rule, and it's even worse when you've got five guys defending the belts.

I think pretty much everyone involved has admitted that Spirit Squad existed solely for the purpose of getting DX to reform.

Yknow, given WWE's past of fetishizing AJ (Kane mask, wrestler's shirts, "punk rock", Yes! chants, etc), you have to imagine the longer she's with Dolph the probability of her wearing a cheerleading outfit approaches 1. Not something I'm interested in just a thought.

I thought the Spirit Squad could have been a viable threat in the Tag Team Division as they could have used their five on two advantage and influence from being Vince's henchmen. For a while, they seemed to be going this route as their numbers was the only thing that could answer the super team of Kane and Big Show.
But then DX squashed them multiple times and didn't care about taking the titles, making the team and the belts look like shit.
