Rip off Saints Row. Have a kayfabe politician representing a government agency declare war on WWE and attack it with a STAG-like commando unit, beating down wrestlers. The politician can say that WWE is the biggest wrestling company, so it's been marked out as a target first. Once WWE is obliterated, they'll attack the indies. A good way to bring The Shield into this is to have them seem like they are working for CM Punk, but as it's revealed, they're actually working for the politician's agency. I like it ;D

I think it'd be too much of a hassle to carefully book a face american military gimmick without offending anyone for them to bother.

Why does everybody think a Military gimmick has to be a heel? Did you all forget Cpl. Kirchner? Or GI Bro? Or Todd Champion? Now, granted, those characters WERE wrestlecrap, but handled well, a military gimmick COULD get over as a babyface. Not a bad idea for non-wartime, but nowadays they'd be inevitably compared to current serving soldiers. And that could be taken in a varying manner of ways, many of which would not be good for either the WWE or the wrestler.

Because if anyone ever punched/grappled/insulted said character, someone would get Finlay fired again? Honestly I think that is not far from the truth. The guy couldn't do anything heelish without pissing off a sponsor and causing trouble. Plus you have problems with the how the military is viewed (its greatly improving but there are still major issues) and then there would controversy with having someone play a member of the military on a show sponsored by the military and targeted to kids (right now they can say the sponsorship is aimed at adults who are watching with kids but I think adding a character would set off watchdog groups). Last character I can remember that was I think military based was La Resistance Rob Conway and I cannot remember if he was supposed to be a ex military member who was jumping to the French side or was pretending to be a military member just to attack the Dudleys and help La Res. He was pretending to be with the Air Force. As you see on TV, all military members get free admission to shows. Around this time, there just happened to be many of them who got front row seats, as a thank you for their service. So, it was a set-up. La Resistance was harassing this guy and the Dudleys rushed to his defense. Then turned on them.

If said person doesn't have the actual military credentials, people are going to get upset. It's not like in the 80's where anyone could call themselves Private, Corporal, and Sergeant and nobody blinks. Nowadays, people can google you and find out info in seconds.
