I know there are major spots planned and people set to be the final 4 and a winner..
But do the wrestlers figure out who is going after who during the match or does every wrestler get to together in the locker room and book there spots?
It just looks so random at times..

I feel they have a back up plan if something goes astray. The same thing happened at Wrestlemania 22's battle royal. People believe that Road Warrior Animal was supposed to win. Because you can see him hold onto the top rope and then Snitsky kicked Viscera and I believe Animal tried to hold on but slipped or something and caused the elimination. Cause also after Animal got eliminated you can see Viscera and Snitsky trying to figure out what to do because Animal was the last Smackdown guy against two RAW guys.

Stuff like randomness and the remaining wrestlers struggling to hang on makes for fun 'what if' moments, like the second Battle Royale they had for the World tag team belts post-WM23. The Hardys, Cade & Murdoch (I think?) and Londrick were the last teams in, and I remember seeing either London or Kendrick hold onto the ropes for dear life, but something happened that caused him to slip.
That was the same time Londrick were still the tag team champions on Smackdown, so a lot of people think maybe they were trying to merge the belts earlier than WM25.

Well i know on the indys and smaller shows and whatnot, veteran guys are peppered throughout the royal to "general" the match, i.e. know when the ring is getting to full, when to eliminate guys, etc etc

This was something I asked Quake a long time ago on the WC forums.
He said they were told beforehand exactly who was going when and who was eliminating who.
When I asked though it was about the Royal Rumble, so I don't know whether that applies to all battle royals in general.

Royal Rumbles are definitely fully booked to the last detail.
The winner and certain eliminations/spots are probably planned in battle royals, but beyond that they seem like they're more on the fly

I always wonder if they have a back-up plan if someone screws up like if Morrsion's parkour bit didn't work.

I always wonder if they have a back-up plan if someone screws up like if Morrsion's parkour bit didn't work. I'd assume the guys who get those high risk spots are guys they're not too worried about accidental eliminations happening to. It's like a sink or swim mentality put on them. If it works, great. If it doesn't, no big deal.

The early Battle Royals I was in, we had a detailed list of who was eliminating who. Like, maybe I would be eliminated when a certain person was due to come out. Now, we just ask the winner who he would like with him in the final four, and all eliminations until then are called in the ring.

Personally, I'm a fan of promotions using battle royals to book that night's card. First two guys get eliminated, there's your first match, and so on...
I know ECW did it quite a bit in the mid-to-late '90s.

The battle royal Khali won on Main Event had a few obvious 'pre-planned' things. The beginning being one where everyone was supposed to be in awe of Khali in a battle royal, but Cody Rhodes jumped the gun and hit Santino...before immediately jumping back because he remembered he was supposed to be staring at Khali.

Also since they were in Chicago it would have made sense for Animal to win as opposed to a random midcarder. The match I'm wondering about in regards to backup plan is the 2006 Royal Rumble. With all the high flying Rey does, did they have a backup plan for if he botched and fell out of the ring?

While I'm just guessing, Randy Orton being the backup winner seems like a safe bet (#30 and won Rey's Mania main event at No Way Out).

Well they could have just made Hunter win since he did face Cena at mania and they could have had the no 1 contender match between Orton and Rey at no way out with the same ending as normal.
