www.wwe.com/classics/ecw/the-true-story-ecw-relaunch-26078068I never knew that Stevie Richards and Tommy Dreamer asked for their releases after December to Dismember and had their requests denied. Interesting stuff here. Especially that it was Johnny Ace and Shane O'Mac that fought for the relaunch in the first place.

Read it last week, really interesting article.
I thought the most interesting tidbit is that, of all people, it was Stevie Richards who would get Shane McMahon ready for his matches.

It disgusts me how WWE is so willing to admit the new ECW sucked now that it's over. If they know it sucks now, they knew then...

From the summer of 2007 to its end it was the best wrestling show on TV.

So why DIDN'T Shane run it instead of Vince? It seems like every time Shane was promised his own little sliver of the company (WCW as a separate brand and then ECW five years later), it was yanked from him. Shane running things would have given Heyman more creative freedom and allowed the brand to be substantially different from Raw and Smackdown.

Styles saying original ECW fans hated ONS2 is pretty hilarious, it was widely loved.

Yeah, Styles seemed to be Mr. Negative Sour Puss during that whole article. One Night Stand 2 was great, and the near-unanimous reaction was that if WWECW as like that, it would have been flourished.

Shane running things would have given Heyman more creative freedom and allowed the brand to be substantially different from Raw and Smackdown. The only answer that ever made sense to me was fear that if Shane & Heyman were successful, it'd expose Vince & Steph's shitty, broken mold of wrestling presentation and force a wide-spread change, company-wide. Shane had a great business sense and feel for trends. And Heyman was a better booker than just about anyone in the company, Vince included. Combined, and unfettered by moronic interference, they may have reinvented the wheel, and took wrestling into a new direction creatively. And as all angles that promise "change" these last few years prove, Vince & co. don't really have any true intention of breaking their inept formula.

I wish they did talk about 2008-2009 because that was an amazing time. Also I kind of wish they talked more about some of the new or talent that reinvented themselves from ECW other than CM Punk. Like The Miz, John Morrison, Kofi Kingston, Sheamus, Mark Henry, Christian, Matt Hardy, etc.

Time and time again it never shocks me how Vince will piss away truckloads of money just because of his own ego.
Shane and Paul teaming up to relaunch ECW in their vision. That would've ruled.

I remember RVD doing an interview after he left WWE and he said how Vince was all in for making ECW like it was back in the day, but out of nowhere he changed his mind and when Rob asked Vince why the change of heart Vince said "our fans won't know how to react to ECW.". Rob said that a combination of a few guys getting in Vince's ear and so many people Vince wanted to bring in saying no killed his interest.
But yeah ECW originally had a different house show tour going to smaller venues. A lot of the young guys Heyman wanted to use just weren't called up.

Styles saying original ECW fans hated ONS2 is pretty hilarious, it was widely loved. It was well liked (especially the two main events) but it wasn't without criticism. People hated JBL, Eugene and Big Show's appearances, the no-contest in Rey vs Sabu (plus Sabu talking), Sandman's new entrance music, pyro being used and the general increase in production values. Orton got a lot of criticism for being included on the show, his restholds and was despised by the live crowd.

I remember most people being fairly disappointed live at ONS 2. They really didn't come alive until the tag match
