I'm trying to find a substitute for tahini because I'm helping someone make scharma. For those who don't know it is a paste made from sesame seeds. I tried looking online, but the only suggestions I got were peanut butter and nut butter neither of which would blend in with the dish. So any suggestions?

Hummus? That frequently has tahini in it.

Hummus? That frequently has tahini in it. Yeah, I've heard tahini was a big ingredient in hummus, but can one really be substituted for the other? Isn't there more ingredients in hummus?

Chickpeas and garlic, mostly... I find they have similar flavours, and wouldn't change the taste of the dish too much. If you use it, I wouldn't use as much due to the garlic.
I also have heard you can substitute toasted sesame oil. Won't have the same texture, but will lend the flavour.

Hummus also has chickpeas in it, so that may affect the flavor as well. It's also often used with Schawarma.
What exactly is the reason why you can't use tahini? Are you trying to make a sauce or put it on the meat?

Are you trying to make a sauce or put it on the meat? The store doesn't have tahini and we can only shop there due to budgets constraints. Do they have sesame seeds and oil? Tahini is basically just a paste made from that, so you can make your own reasonable facsimile by grinding those together. Or some sesame oil will give you a similar flavor, like Cherry Covered Funk said.
