How about a Rock Station where the employes were told in two days this station is turning Latino, but we will not tell you what time. So at around 4ish if I remember right, the on air DJ at the time started ranting about the crap of I think it was clear channel taking over and firing everyone because they did not speak Spanish. And mid sentance they switched to some loud Mexican music.
Gah that pissed me off.

Oh man, I can't believe I forgot another recent/hilarious one: A news/talk station (damn, I listen to a lot of this crap - though apparently, not much anymore since they're all changing formats) transforming into an all-comedy station earlier this summer. Seriously. They just air stand-up comedy bits 24/7. And before the final format took place, they used to air political gaffes 24/7.

In the LA area, 100.3 The Beat went from Rap/R&B to soft rock out of NOWHERE. Is that what happened to The Beat? I always wondered why it disappeared and did so suddenly. How long ago was this? 10 years ago? Man this was ages ago...I was in 5th or 6th grade. So that's about 6-7 years ago.

Here's another one for LA. Indie 103.1 was as the name suggested, a radio station that played more indie/college rock, but I liked it because they had good shows and actually gave metal (and I mean extreme and obscure stuff) a show on Sunday nights which was really good. About 4 years ago they switched over to a Tex-Mex/Banda Spanish music station.

Finally, I think the majority of rock stations are usually obsessed with the past over what's out now. That could explain why rock is losing ground on radio. And imo, a lot of what accounts for hard rock now isn't so inspiring. But that's for another thread. /rant over Actually, i read a Blender article several years ago that says that the reason several rock stations play more older music (or go straight classic rock) is due to the fact that lots of beer companies like to advertise on those stations. However, since they cant be seen as advertising to minors, they play music which would appeal to the 21 and over crowd.

In 2010, my town's Top 40 station flipped to sports talk.
On the last day before the format change, the station playlist consisted entirely of songs about sports, or songs an arena might use to pump the crowd up (Enter Sandman, Pump Up the Jam, and so on).
I thought that was a neat idea; it was a huge step up from what the station played previously.

Likewise, I think a big reason for the lack of modern rock stations is because people interested can just find stuff online, moreso than with other formats.

A few years ago our local smooth jazz station changed format and became just another top 40 station. Same thing happened in my city.

One that happened in Australia last year.
When my siblings and I get together with my Dad with used to put the radio onto a station imaginatively called 'Classic Rock'.. It was good lots of old rock track.
Then one weekend we put the station on and they were playing Michael Buble, Sade and other s*** like that. Because whoever ran this station could not make up their mind on their format... So it became 'Smooth FM' and we never tuned in again.
Another thing. Australia just does not want a comedy radio station I have decided. Even on the digital channels. We had one called Barry which was not bad, played a variety of stand up, comedy podcasts, old radio sketches, and such.. Then one day the station became 'Birds' and it just plays... well Birds (the animal, not the band).

Because right now, I only really listen to Country 102.5, WEEI, and WROR.

New York City - The largest city in the USA yet they can't support a modern rock station. This can't be stressed enough. For those outside NYC, let me explain the recent saga of 101.9. They first abandoned their smooth jazz format in 2008 for a station playing classic/modern rock. Then since their owner was in serious debt, they sold it new owners which included a man who helped make Clear Channel a dirty word in radio, and made it into a female-friendly all news station. Nobody listened. Then abruptly last summer, they pulled it and brought back a modern rock format. Only months later for it to become an FM simulcast of all-sports powerhouse WFAN. The worse thing is that there is another frequency that's rumored to be flipping to country once that sale is done. Imagine that, NYC is gonna have a country station, but no modern rock station. I can't imagine any country acts that come from NYC at all. Also, it's a good thing CBS-FM flipped away from Jack, even if they had to get rid of 50's and a lot of 60's music and add more 80's music. It's these demographic reasons also as to why news/talk/sports stations are migrating to FM (ie WFAN on FM) since nobody young really listens to AM radio anymore. And it's also why smooth jazz is virtually gone from radio. Finally, I think the majority of rock stations are usually obsessed with the past over what's out now. That could explain why rock is losing ground on radio. And imo, a lot of what accounts for hard rock now isn't so inspiring. But that's for another thread. /rant over That about sums it all up. I listen to WFAN a lot, but man I wish I didn't have to lose RXP. That was my favorite radio station ever because they played a ton of interesting and not-so-super-mainstream stuff. Though I'm not surprised coming from CBS Radio. They're the ones that killed K-Rock and made it a worthless FM talk radio station. Then they brought it back because no one cares about FM talk radio. Then they killed it again to make it a worthless Top 40 station that's trying to compete with Z100. There was a similar saga to a near legendary alt. rock station based in central/south NJ called 106.3. It was one of the vanguards of the alt rock movement on the east coast. It was Matt Pinfield's original brainchild based out of his experience in the New Brunswick alt. rock scene. It was a brilliant station. Then it became a little more corporate but still played some good rock. Then it became Top 40 (ugh). Now it's a country station. Right now, the only options I have for rock music are 104.3 (classic rock) and 95.9 and 105.5 which play a mix of older and newer stuff. I like them, but they don't play a lot of alt. rock or punk beyond the most mainstream stuff.

Philadelphia here, 2 stations I cared about I shall talk about
96.5 The Point - Was an 80s station, I recall junior year of high school in 2000-2001 hearing this and I was really gettin into 80s music and this helped alot, one of the last times id make a mix tape of songs on cassette....id eventually make a cd-r of these songs. By 2002 it slowly started saying playing the 80s and more, which at first meant yea youd hear maybe some late 70s super early 90s, but then youd start hearin more 90s and then they flat out became a 80s 90s station (maybe 70s 80s 90s) there already was one of these at the time! (mix 95.7) and then it would just drop being the point and became a hip hop station.
Looking back, Im fine that it doesnt exist anymore, as I can find even more songs I may have never heard from the 80s online like last.fm and others.
But now for the station I really did like and miss....94 WYSP Ah WYSP, Phillys Rock Station, growing up I loved listening to thos, whether it be howard stern in the morning, mandatory metallica at night. Best part was this station leaned more towards hard rock/metal, and I always thought it was better than WMMR. The first change would happen after howard stern left....it would become Free FM...all talk shows, and dont get me wrong a few wee good (kidd chris) and some sucked (david lee roth mornings lol) but its purpose was killed at that time. It would fail and go back to being 94 WYSP as a rock station for like a year or so then became a 70s 80s 90s rock station, which I dug! Even tho I will admit it quite was never as awesome, still my favorite station. Problem is, the sports talk station wanted to go from AM to FM and well sadly 94.1 is a good signal, so WYSP sadly went away in 2011 with fade to black being the final song. Now WMMR is my choice station, i actually listened to it the other day, first time in a whilllle I listened to the radio cause I was doin gas station where I work (supermarket) its not bad, and hopefully it will always stay a rock station.
Also I did dig Y100 too back in the day, radio 104.5 (modern rock) isnt as good.

Q101. It was THE indie rock station in Chicago. Someone ended up buying it last year and turning it into a "hot adult contemporary"....whatever the f*** that means. They have digital substations now that cater to southern Asia music.
I kiss my satellite radio all the time. It's extremely rare for me to actually listen locally aside from sports PBP.
