Always been a fan of Cena but when he was a heel he was great. It's too bad the younger fans don't know anything about it.

It really is kinda sad that the buildup to Rock vs. Cena is the most "heelish" that Cena's been since 02-03.

He seemed like a real douche when he was a heel...oh wait he seems like a real douche as a face now...

Cena was great during that heel run. Solid promo every week and he was on fire. For the life of me, I can't figure out why Vince is so hellbent on keeping a face even if he has been booed out of the building for the past 5 years.

I grew to like heel Cena. He was somewhat edgy, and had some good raps.
There was demand for a face turn, and it wasn't badly done.
It just eventually went down hill. He became watered down, and a walking merchandise seller.
It's just never gonna happen again because there's no other TOP faces. Orton is too unreliable. Sheamus just isn't good enough.

The only way another top babyface can be establish to Cena's level is if there's a long period where Cena is out (ex. Austin in late '99-'00; Rock becomes the top face).

I remember some fans were miffed that Taker and Angle won at Vengeance and No Mercy respectively, and that Cena needed the win more.
Those were the days.

Always been a fan of Cena but when he was a heel he was great. It's too bad the younger fans don't know anything about it. As well they really shouldn't. There's a few raps/vignettes off that first DVD that I just cringe and think "I don't know if I want my son to watch that."

His rap promo on Benoit was amazing.
"Don't ever judge me dude, you just a Dynamite ripoff."

For the life of me, I can't figure out why Vince is so hellbent on keeping a face even if he has been booed out of the building for the past 5 years. His merchandise sells like crazy and no matter how much the older and hardcore fans hate and boo him, the younger fans still cheer him and buy his merchandise. A heel turn is risky business with Cena. It has to be done really well to attract the older and hardcore fans and make the younger fans hate him, but not in the "I don't want to see him anymore" kind of hate.

A lot of people forget that the gimmick was basically a joke at first and he was essentially a comedic loud-mouth jobber heel with the credibility of a current day Heath Slater. He was treated like a complete joke character at the Royal Rumble and the months preceding it. It wasn't until he started cutting those promos on Brock that they probably noticed the reactions he was getting and decided to take it further. I remember some fans were miffed that Taker and Angle won at Vengeance and No Mercy respectively, and that Cena needed the win more. Those were the days. One little thing that's always bugged me even though in the long run it obviously didn't matter was Cena/Undertaker not happening at Summerslam 2003. They were having a great feud and had a really good match on the previous PPV yet they ended up just blowing it off with a rematch on Smackdown and went with a boring Undertaker/A-Train match at Summerslam instead while Cena, who was the fastest rising guy in the company at the time, wasn't even on the card.

Cena was so refreshing during this period. At a time when the company seemed to be dragging its feet with creating new stars and letting go remnants from the InVasion that they were doing nothing with, Cena was just about the only consistent week-in week-out reason to watch Smackdown.
It was really a slow, organic build too. Even the Backlash 2003 tournament and main event, since it was understood they wouldn't be the focal point of the show, allowed him to become such a believable contender.
Cena-Angle from No Mercy 2003 is still in my top 5 Cena matches and I'd go as far as to say one of the few matches that's better watching now than it was at the time. Given that 2003 was the year where just about every main event was a finisher kick-out-fest (and this one is no exception), watching it now when we are so desensitized to the magnitude of such an act makes it a lot more fun.

To me, Cena never really gained any actual "credibility" until his face turn. Before that, he was just the punching bag that the top SmackDown faces would beat on when they had nothing better to do.

I'm happy to say that I didn't even like Cena as a heel. Don't care for him all that much now.

I also really enjoyed Cena's heel persona the Dr. of Thuganomics. I loved him ko'ing Big Show behing the ref's back, with his chain wrapped fist at 'Mania.

I recently was reminded that Billy Kidman was the man that made Cena turn heel. Not the fans. Not Edge. Not ECW beating him up. Not Kane wanting him to embrace the hate. But Billy Kidman. Billy Kidman made John Cena embrace the hate.
