So, different team name then? lol I don't care we don't have to have one do we? Nope. I do like Purgatory Maybe. 6 out of 8 teams have their picks in, good to see we're maintaining pace. Still loving the picks so far.

Fantastic pace for a difficult round. Couple more posts and we'll have to start a new thread. When we do, please allow me to use the first two posts to store all the game info and such. Thanks. All but one pick is in. Very happy at the song selection and the pace that we've been moving at. I hope contestants enjoy the team round and that's all I'm going to say about that.

I'm working on my opinions for the songs sent for the first Round. I'll move it here and finish it up as I go through the songs again. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}
20th Century Boy- T.Rex- I'm a fan of T.Rex but I sat down a couple of weeks ago and actually listened to a lot of their songs for the first time, so I like the timing for the pick personally. Great energy but I think it lags a little at the end; it's a wonderful song to sing along to, even if it's not the best vocal performance ever (Marc Bolan makes up for that with his charisma). But it doesn't matter because of the awesome drumming; I like the horn at the end. I'm very happy that T.Rex got represented in the game, especially this early. To me, this is a wonderful first round pick because of it's energy and, quite frankly, it's not what we're accustomed to see in first rounds.
Backwater- Meat Puppets- Heh, when I heard the vocalist start singing I went "Oh, it's that song!" I've heard this a couple of times over the years but I wasn't sure who recorded it. I confess to know of the Brothers Meat Puppets mostly from Nirvana's Unplugged session but what I've heard from them, including last Season's element pick (Lake of Fire), I've loved. It's great that they got represented here because, like Green River, they were a key figure in Grunge that doesn't get represented a lot. I like the vocals- it's understated with a good flow that you know influenced a lot of people. Listening to the end, I like the guitaring and drumming; it's actually relaxing, heh, which you can't often say about the genre. Not sure if it's the best song to start out with, since it might be more useful later, but that's not too important.
Young the Giant- Cough Syrup- This has a Coldplay feel to it, certainly. I'm a fan of the lyrics; well written in my opinion. The rhythm works wonderfully. Everything sounds clear, strong, and the production makes sure that nothing fights. Not necessarily the type of music I'd listen to and, honestly, the cough syrup main verse doesn't really work for me. I like the early strings and the instrumental bridge at 2:46 or so in the song is amazing. Enjoyed the singer's voice quite a bit. I think this was a good pick to start with because it's distinct from everything else in the round but it might have been something to save for later. High quality song to start out with, though.
Daredevil- Fiona Apple- This pick right here, oh my! Roxie Daggers mentioned to me, she wanted to be a "Daredevil" with her first pick and I think she succeeded tremendously. I love Fiona Apple but I confess not to have listened to her entire body of work, so this was new for me. This was a challenging, challenging song. I adore it, I simply do. That said, this was an absolute risk and the scoring reflects that. This is not typically of her hits, it is not initially listener friendly, it is idiosyncratic to the highest degree. She's playing with complicated arrangement here, her lyrics are unconventional, and you cannot guess what she'll do next. I found it fascinating to listen to but it's a song that I can wholly understand wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. I want to listen to a live performance of this just to see what she does. Risky, risky first round pick but it blew away some people, and that's one way of introducing yourself, heh.
Death to All But Metal- Steel Panther- First, incredible band name, incredible song title. Fantastic energy, with lyrics to sing along to, which I think is something to consider in an opening round pick. This ranked rather low, I think, because it could be seen as being a parody that fails to transcend what it parodies. Now, do I think that? I'm not sure. I think it's justifiable to interpret it that way but let's just focus on the song for the purposes of my non-judging opinion. I liked it but did not love it. I would love to listen to these guys straight up because I think the playing is great. Love the falsetto the lead singer used for some of the high notes and playing was constantly good thorough out. This was a strong round so the song might not have been the best to start with. Gutsy choice though.
Dolphin's Cry- Live- I'll preference this by saying I've never been a Live fan. I think the earnestness of their emotions is questionable (at times) for me. I won't let that influence my comments. There is a power to the lead singer's vocals and the playing compliments it well. The lyrics make me cringe at times with the emotion while, at other times, it works perfectly well. I found this to be one of their better songs and a fine choice for this game. I don't know if it's a great pick for an opening round though. Not sure why, maybe the pacing of the song, I don't know. However, for someone who isn't a fan of the group, I enjoyed the song, felt that it wasn't a safe pick, and it worked for me.
Father of Mine- Everclear- "Daddy gave me a name and then he walked away." Haunting lyric. Some of the lyrics don't work for me, mostly because of the singer's delivery but, considering the subject matter, it's not like I can tell the singer, "Eh, you should do better," since it's such a personal song. I think the song's too busy for me; it's like, if it was a bit simpler, it would better for me. I think there isn't enough build for the first big guitar riff at :41 or so. The drum beat, at times, seems unnecessary. This is all coming from someone who is not musical at all, in terms of playing, but it doesn't work well for me. That said, it has such emotion that I applaud using it as a first pick.
Finally- The Frames- I applaud using a live pick here, since there is always a risk involved in doing so. I'm not a particular fan of the lead singer's voice but he's a good performer and I believe his emotion. The string work adds quite a bit to the song. The build up starting at 3:00 is amazing and it pays off well, imo. I very much started to get emotionally invested at the song during that and the string work matches well with the other instruments. The singer picked it up too and the drumming stood out wonderfully. Overall, very strong pick for the opening round that sets up some expectations for the contestant. Maybe it could've been saved for later? Well, as the game has shown in the past, you can't really save up picks.
Hold On- Alabama Shakes- Powerful vocals, reminds me of some the better Southern Rock singers I've heard mixed with a soul edge. Good, clean guitar and drum, something I'd love to sit down and listen to at a bar with a beer or two. I liked the piano playing at the 1:25 mark or so, added a nice background to the song. I think the song stretches on a bit towards the end but I'm weird sometimes about that; I like the tone change at the end, with her softer voice. I think this was a great introductory pick though, as it's quite versatile, it could've worked well in a more specialized round.
I Thank You- Sam & Dave- "I want everybody to get up off your seat/ And get your arms together, and your hands together /And give me some of that o-o-old soul clapping" Wow, what a way to start a song! I could listen to this man sing all day long. I don't think the background instrument playing lives up to the sheer power of both singers; not sure a lot would, to be fair, but still. This would be a fun, fun song to sing at a karaoke bar. Also, I love it that we have an, at times, underrepresented genre give its respect. I think this a fantastic opening song, personally. You could've held it for another round but I'm definitely behind this choice.
