At one point Jon Stewart was signed to a holding deal with Worldwide Pants. But oddly enough, when 12:35 opened they offered Kilburn the chance to replace Tom Snyder over Jon Stewart (which gave Stewart the chance to take over TDS). From what I've read in The War For Late Night by Bill Carter that Stewart didn't get the Late Late Show was that they would essentially have to hire another set of writers that would match Stewart's comic sensibilities and since Stewart's comic sensibilities mirror Letterman it would be like staffing Late Show all over again. Plus having a younger version of Letterman right after Letterman would cause a lot of talk of succession. I don't see why it would be a bad idea to have someone with the same comic sensibilities follow Letterman's slot. If anything, that's what Craig Ferguson is doing right now, albeit with his own twist on it. Both Craig and Dave seem to share a similar, Dadaistic sense of irreverent humor. As long as the 11:35 slot gets decent ratings, it shouldn't really be a concern about whether the 12:35 guy is about to succeed the 11:35 guy's spot. While similar, I think that there's a distinct difference in Letterman and Ferguson's executions. Letterman's style has always been an ironic take on the talk show format (something Stewart has done with "The Daily Show" and the evening news format) whereas Ferguson's been moreso rotted an absurdist tribute to the talk show standards, much like Conan's "Late Night" tenure, with those two deviating in terms of Conan's insular deconstruction through genuine admiration of talk shows whereas Ferguson (As indicated by the intimate way they frame his monologue) moreso about breaking the 4th wall and winking to his audience in a perpetual state of "can you believe this is a talk show?" sort of way.

Did you ever see Letterman's tenure on Late Night? He was really similar to Conan there. Conan's style is really influenced by Late Night-era Letterman.
John Oliver is a really good choice for the replacement host because if his standup is anything to judge by, he's pretty much a younger, British Jon Stewart. He's a little more dry, but the two are really similar.
He did a really funny standup bit about John Cena announcing Osama Bin Laden's death to a WWE crowd.

John Oliver should be good to fill in.

Did you ever see Letterman's tenure on Late Night? He was really similar to Conan there. Conan's style is really influenced by Late Night-era Letterman. They're similar in their irreverence and execution (self-deprecating in terms of the show's presentation and the network) but those two incarnations of "Late Night" had very distinctly different aims. Letterman wanted to do an ironic deconstruction of the talk show. He made the format look stupid and had a blast along the way. It's a wonderfully cynical show hosted by a charismatic curmudgeon. Conan did the exact opposite. If anything, "Late Night" on the surface was the most traditional late night talk show on television. From an orchestra instead of a band, to the presentation (down to the show's font) to Conan's downright chippur demeanor, it's a straight-forward fun show hosted by a guy as genuinely excited about the show as you are.

With Oliver hosting they should get Andy Zaltsman in as a correspondent. It would be like the Bugle TV show.

All things must come to an end, but this may not necessarily be a sign that Stewart is winding down as host of The Daily Show. It's a summer hiatus. John Oliver is a good choice to fill in for him.

It's great watching that then seeing the actual clip on Youtube of Cena announcing the death. He really did use the phrase "caught and compromised to a permanent end."
