From what I recall reading, no one explained the rules to either him or Kidman. Malenko forgot the rules More specifically, they had the Triple Threat Theater concept planned for that PPV, with Jarrett vs. Benoit for the US title doing what WWE would later call Three Stages of Hell where they have three matches, each with a different gimmick. The first one was to be a Dungeon Rules match, where the ropes were taken off the ring, and the first guy to get thrown out of the ring wins. Of course, Souled Out 2000 is infamously known as the PPV where Bret Hart and Jeff Jarrett were injured and taken off the card, preempting both the main events of the show. The Triple Threat Theater was repurposed as Billy Kidman taking on all the members of the Revolution, and the Dungeon Rules match would be renamed as a Catch As Catch Can Match, with the ropes still on the ring but the ring out stipulation still enforced. So, with Malenko and Kidman taking a match hyped to originally be Chris Benoit and Jeff Jarrett, Dean got confused and did the standard heel bails from the ring spot in a match where doing so would cause him to lose.

He just...he just powerbombed.... I do find it funny that the one time Kidman gets powerbombed, he pretty much gets obliterated in the same fashion that Eddie Guerrero got obliterated by THAT Chris Benoit powerbomb. Shelton Benjamin also powerbombed him at least once. That was pretty solid as well.

I'm a big fan of the Varsity Club gimmick but seriously, why was this a thing that happened heading into the year 2000?

It also just dawned on me in that picture that together with their Syracuse and Michigan logos Rotunda and Steiner make "S&M", which seems like the kind of thing Russo would resurrect a gimmick for just because he finds it funny.

I doubt it, because they also had Kevin Sullivan in the group.
