Tyger, a question on the number portion of this (since it's the harder of the two imo). If the number is used within the song's lyrics, does it need to be a major part of them or could it be a throwaway line? EDIT: Nevermind... found a song I wanted in youtube. Good question. It could be a throwaway line imo, I would allow that; Judges could take that into consideration, though, if they feel that the Song needs to feature the numbers in a prominent manner. Personally, I think contestants can be clever with it and the use of the numbers would be just as important as the amount of times they are mentioned.

Yay, not last! And now, more people know of the greatness of miss Mandy (though some of the judges choose to ignore it... for now ). I was plesantly surprised to see Mandy Moore used this round. Out of the picks used in this round I think your two picks probably showed the most in terms of evolution (of an artist's sound). Also, In My Pocket is a really solid pop song. In fact that album has a few pretty damn good pop tunes. Pocket Philosopher I hadn't heard before but I really enjoyed the vibe. Which means Stinger and I have a darn lot in comon with music tastes, based on the songs he has picked so far. I thought it was J, lol. But apparently the judging hasn't reflected that part so well, my Nutella friend. (Come on now, J!) I knew after seeing the scores that you would be "mad" at me . We still have similar tastes but we can't agree on everything

No Problem J, you still have a chance to do a better job these upcoming rounds if I survive the current round - particularly with the upcoming School Daze Themes (Names and Numbers). =P [This was obviously a joke]
=================================
I deleted my last post, because I don't want to single out any one selection on the list as being any better than the rest as that's not the case, especially after listening to all of them. There was one artist I hoped to use later on, but there were a few great selections in there that I really liked that could have possibly did just as well as that one for this round, if I was a judge. People are impressing me with their selections and I love that. A lot. I'll talk about them after judging is done.

If the number is used within the song's lyrics, does it need to be a major part of them or could it be a throwaway line? . Throwaway lines are great by me. I don't judge by how well it fits the theme. The steps are a) Does it fit the theme? b) if "yes," then proceed to rank songs from best to worst on their own merits. ------------------------------------------------------ Also, unrelated ... As a judge, I used to do little posts in the later season of FAN idol to take up time while waiting for songs. They were rankings of various things throughout the seasons. Sneak preview of this round's rankings. One of the "lists" I constructed back in the day has finally been toppled. (I'm being vague on purpose.) But yeah, completely toppled.

Random Thoughts about the last few Rounds- I wanted to do the Brodus Clay/ Heath Slater encounter later in the game but I decided to change a few Rounds as I felt that one was fairly redundant given how some of the Rounds have played out and another was too vague. I've wanted to do that write-up, as well as the Sandow/Steiner one for months now; as I mentioned before, one of the cool things about Hosting is seeing ideas that you've had on your mind for a long time actually playing so, whoever does the next Season, don't throw away the cool ideas that you come up with because you think they aren't feasible. Not saying people should do what I do but, if you like to do write-ups, keep that in mind. The whole point behind the write-ups, besides the fun involved, is that I'm not a big fan of shows like American Idol and the Voice. I love music but I've never been a huge fan of the competition shows, so I didn't feel comfortable hosting from that vantage point like Past Idol Seasons that were based off of American Idol and the Voice (some of the write-ups from those Seasons are fantastic and feel quite like the shows). So, whoever Hosts next, play to your strengths and interests. I love the fact that you simply cannot predict the Round Winners among the contestants. There have been a few repeat Round Winners but, considering that we're at Round 17, it's amazing that we've had so many different winners especially since there are few categories that focus on a specific genre or time period. Was surprised that it took this long to see a Janis Joplin song. Another cool thing is seeing if your favorite bands will make an appearance; while they aren't my favorite band, I will mark out if the Band in my user pic shows up (the one with the freaky face .

I hate this round. A huge number of these songs deserve to be number one in ANY round of competition. Someone's going to have to get 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and it's ticking me off. An injustice. If any of those people in that middle block have to be eliminated now, I'm going to be one disappointed judge.

If it's like that now, imagine what it'll be like when we get to the top six and then the top four? Remember, we still have that Save floating around out there. If you do find yourself in the Elimination Sing-Off, swing for the bleachers. I know no one wants to be up for Elimination, so make it hard for the Judges by bringing the same awesomeness to that Round that you do for the Main ones.

I know which one Gus is talking about
Gus, the song is ok as long as it's not done by the same artist (example Pink and Queen Bohemian Rhapsody)

It's very obvious that we have a wide range of judges which I totally dig... when the same song gets a 10 and a 1. Although, how someone could give U2 a 1... completely astounds me... they're awesome... Gosh! . LOL Also, digging the picks in this round. Great variety!

If it is a cover song (that hasn't been used before), it's legal. I'm at work but I have a little free time now. Will respond to PMs momentarily.
As far as I can tell, all the songs are legal but let me know which ones you believe are not and I'll double check.
One song that seemed to have been an issue was found to be legal but I haven't heard if another song was problematic. I think everything else should be ok, as nothing is on the Past Season's list.
5 out of 9(10 with the Save), 1 song for each category, picks are in for Round 18: School Daze.

Got my rankings in I will say this was the best round BY FAR! You all brought your A games there wasn't one song I didn't like this round.
I agree with my rankings but it was sad to see some really great songs get a low ranking but man this round was STACKED!

Hunger Strike- Temple of the Dog
Ah yes. A song that got so much overplay … AFTER the year it actually was released. Admittedly, I’ve always had resentment toward this song because it’s the poster child for “retrospective classics” in music. It was good (and it IS good) but the bandwagon rolled into town with a thunder when people suddenly realized “Hey, Soundgarden is REALLY good and Pearl Jam is REALLY good.” So this song automatically – you guessed it – became REALLY good. I hate that. Trying to keep that bias aside, now moving on to comments about the song itself. I like it well enough. I think it’s a stellar duet that mixes two distinct styles of the exact same genre. On the other hand, I think both vocalists have done MUCH MUCH more stellar work than this. There is a lot of positive to the song in terms of the blending of the vocals (and the musicianship isn’t bad and is certainly not overstated), but overplay has really not done it any favors with this judge. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Like a Stone- Audioslave
I don’t remember Audioslave being used a single time before this season. I like how this pick (unlike the first one—almost antithetically so) has become a forgotten classic. This song rules, and I think it has grown well after its initial popularity. (It’s amazing what a song in context with a different era altogether will do for itself.) So many bands out there that THINK they are pulling this kinda thing off, yet they are not even close. This is the real deal. This is an amazing display of Evolution for an artist as well, and the pairing here works wonders for this particular round. Well done. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Clash City Rockers
Yes! I thought for sure we’d see Clash used in this game. This is classic Clash being classic. Shut your mouth indeed. No more needs to be said. This is distinct and iconic signature stuff. So many copy cats and imitators in music, but The Clash is true to the The Clash and that’s it. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Rudie Can’t Fail
Not sure on the evolution part so much here. Yes, this is a different type of song from the group, but I was thinking more of a transformation than this was upcoming. London Calling is a great album, can’t deny that. Comparatively, I’m not sure the overall impact of an Evolution round resonates as much with The Clash as it did for the Chris Cornell example—seemed like two way different eras in the previous example. Love the way this song frolics through its melodies though. Trademark Clash right there. -------------------------------------------------------------------- All Will Be Well- The Gabe Dixon Band
This pick is really really interesting to me. I did not know the song, so you slipped one past me here. A surprise and one well worth the round. Very much a pick less likely and it will prompt a replay of all the songs to find its proper ranking. I thank you for the exposure to this song. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Till You’re Gone- The Gabe Dixon Band
A big risk with this band, but I’m supportive of it. I definitely got an evolution vibe from All Will Be Well to this. A fine example of the round’s theme, and at the same time, you somehow pulled off exposing people (or at least me) to a new band. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Basket Case - Green Day
This, to me, is Green Day. I’m betting I’ll like this much more than the “evolution” pick, which I’ve not looked at yet. I know every word, and while it’s not exactly monumental music-making, it was successful in what it tried to pull off. Yeah, this is real Green Day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21 Guns (2009)- Green Day
Maudlin and pretentious. The Green Day I’ve come to hate. I know they’re popular. I know some will argue it’s a more sophisticated Green Day than they were. It’s just impossible for me to imagine this is the artist they are. If so, why weren’t they bringing this kind of stuff from the get-go? I just hate when bands try to “transform” themselves by denying what they once were. The example of Evolution is akin to what buries so many other bands who “forget” who they once were. Just my two cents. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Crazy on You- Heart
Yes! Never saw this coming! Good surprise pick for me. LOVE that opening musically! That’s a captivator for what’s to come vocally. And my oh my, what this duo does to me vocally! Amazing! Made a quest to venture off 100 miles or so to catch them in concert a couple of years ago after seeing a live performance on TV a few months earlier. I could listen to this over and over. A staple for girl power rock. One of the best! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Never- Heart
Good follow-up on the evolution. A distinct representation of the theme at work here again. And another freaking good song! (Was so glad you didn’t pick “All I Wanna Do is Make Love To You”.) Love their early stuff, and this is a solid continuation of what the group started into the more “standard” 80s power ballad stuff. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Area Codes (feat Nate Dogg) – Ludacris
I really like Ludacris the celebrity. Familiar with the song here and seems like an Evolution pick that will benefit from the actual Evolution part. I love Ludacris’s delivery vocally, but Area Codes is just comes across so shallow to me. I know it’s probably supposed to be fun, but it’s not really tongue-in-cheek like some “fun” songs of this variety. The groove is fine, but I just don’t get where bragging about your manhood comes across as anything but trying too hard. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Undisputed (featuring Floyd Mayweather) – Ludacris
See, this is in the same vein as the song before, BUT there is a mature emphatic delivery to it that comes across as less “green” and “inexperienced.” It’s so strange to hear a similar themed song as before, yet while the first is a little empty and shallow, this comes across as having more swagger and being more convincing. There is also much more going on in this song lyric wise than in Area Codes. A definite Evolution and one that works out for the good of the artist. Yes, it’s still a cocky “my manhood is better than yours” type of song, but it’s a lot more believable, and a whole heck of a lot more clever than the previous pick. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Definition (Ft. Snoop Dogg and Pooh Bear) (Language Warning)- Lupe Fiasco A definite hook evident in the chorus/refrain. But that’s just about as far as it goes with me. This is going to be an unfair statement, but you know what I think every time I hear this song? How much better it would be if Mace was the one rapping these lyrics instead. I like it for what it is, and it certainly gives the contestant a fighting chance in this round, but Lupe Fiasco may have not “evolved” for the better, and that’s sort of a pre-requisite for this category. I feel like this is some of his best work, and I dig it. Snoop may have stolen some of his thunder here as well as the Pooh Bear vocal. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Words I Never Said (Ft. Skylar Grey) (Language Warning)- Lupe Fiasco
My comments here are an echo of the Green Day second song comment. Pretentious and maudlin. I have one reaction when I hear lyrics in a song like this: “Really?” (Sorry, sounds trolly, I know.) But I just think of all the creative things Lupe Fiasco and people like that COULD be doing, and they try to “make a statement” with songs like this, and it just falls flat everytime. It doesn’t move me. It doesn’t affect me. It just comes across as sad. Here you have an established artist who has enough popularity to get a platform, and instead of making music, Lupe and others decide to make some faux attempt at political maneuvering. If anything, this makes me DEvalue the situations that are brought up in the song rather than take them seriously. Way too maudlin. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In My Pocket- Mandy Moore
This is one of those examples of Mandy Moore where it feels like she’s stretching to fit into pop star mode. Doesn’t seem natural or believable like it does for other acclaimed pop stars who seem born to do it. I give credit in that there is a hook, but it’s just a little difficult to buy into for me. Like I said, a little stretched and unnatural for her. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pocket Philosopher- Mandy Moore
Great example of evolution here. This is more down Mandy Moore’s wheelhouse. This is what she should be doing. The grandiose nature of the pick before just swallowed her up, and Moore isn’t the performer (in this judge’s opinion) to keep up with the stretch of In My Pocket. I dig what you did with the variation on “pocket” song titles. I get the evolution; it’s just that the previous pick may hold back this one, which is the far superior piece. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hit Me With Your Best Shot (1979)- Pat Benatar
Great song, great artist, great live version. The enthusiasm is here. The vocals are dead on. The genre from which it operates in well-represented. Power girl rock once again (much like Heart) and I’m interested to see where the Evolution goes from here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We Belong (1984)- Pat Benatar
And you go from raw power to this song: perhaps the best song in the entire Benatar library. Well played, well played. Most definitely an Evolution, and one that goes a long way with this judge. I have no idea how they get those sitar-like sounds in the chorus (it may be a sitar, I dunno) and instrumental in the “fluttering portions” of the chorus. I dig it so much. So understated and it goes such a long way. Minimalism meets powerful chorus. It works like a gem. Looking at one of the top picks of the entire game right here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pride (in the name of Love)- U2
I was listening to “One” today, and thought that U2 would be perhaps the most obvious artist to use for this round of Evolution. We just saw some raw raw power in the vocal of Benatar, and U2 does the same here. That’s just the unmimickable note: “Naiiiiiiime-uh.” Bono just demolishes everything in this song and the crispness of everything is just perfect. Love the precision, no matter how predictable the artist may have been. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vertigo- U2
YES! YES! YES! Such an underrated album! And the true definition of an “evolved” band. I’m marking out for the selection off of this album. Couldn’t really go wrong with ANY of the tracks off of it. Love the “stutter step” of the guitar riffs and the melody is so perfect. Remember those minimalist guitar licks in Pat Benatar’s “We Belong?” Same here. So much going on musically and then reeling it back with the guitar scratches is the perfect combo. And we’ve already commented on precise vocals of Bono. What more needs to be said? I’ll even so far as to say there is a twinge of Bjork in the “kneeeeeel” and “feeeeeel” vocal. Anyone? Anyone? I totally get that.
1. U2 2. Pat Benatar 3. Heart
4. Chris Cornell 5. The Gabe Dixon Band
6. The Clash 7. Green Day 8. Ludacris 9. Lupe Fiasco 10. Mandy Moore
