With asperger's syndrome after taking some half arsed online test..
I mean seriously over the past few years I've come across a onslaught of arseholes who claim to have aspergers after they took an online test, when in reality their just dickheads with shitty social skills and will make every excuse known to man to avoid seeing a actual doctor because they know will doctor will tell they don't have it. As someone with it I really can't stand these people as I reckon they are reason why there are people out there who think it doesn't exists etc.
Last night I went to a party where there was this one guy who went around telling everyone that he had it. I asked when was he diagnosed and he said about two weeks ago and after a couple of minutes he admitted he had not seen a actual doctor and just assumed he had it because he took some internet test. I told him if he really thinks he he has it he should go to a doctor because said doctor can confirm if he has it or maybe it could a number of other things such as depression etc. But no he said the doctor could get it wrong and I know myself better than any doctor can. Now as far as I'm concerned the guy doesn't has it and really trying to find something which he can excuse him for having crappy social skills, or he won't shut up about how much he likes Adventure Time and MLP and not to mention that girls find him to be a creepy bastard.
But really is the internet really to blame for these arseholes or something else that is the cause.

for some reason mental illnesses seem to become 'cool' from time to time. I remember a few years back when David Beckham came out that he had OCD and near every other person I met started to claim they had at least a mild form of it as well. Now Im not doubting David Beckham, maybe he does indeed have it, but there was definatly a trend of people claiming to be OCD and then giving their reasons it turns out they just have common sense (eg 'I've got OCD, I cannot leave the house until I've checked the taps are turned off' is not OCD).
Ive seen people do the same thing with ADHD, Bipolar disorder and a couple of others. People never claim to have the full fledged version (that would make them crazy YO) but they always have a 'mild form of' (just enough to justify getting some attention) x

Ok,first I want to say that there is such a thing as Aspergers, and I do want to diminish the effect this disease afflicts those who suffer from it.
However, I have a story to one up you. Tonight I went to a work party, and someone tried to suggest that I had Aspergers since I wasn't in the most social state of mind. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, and I really don't want to come off as whiny, one of my close friends passed away, and since it kinda hit me hard, I needed to get out of the house and get a change of surroundings, but this guy almost got on the fighting side of me. I can't hold it against the guy, he is new, and didn't know Curtis(my friend who passed away) like some of the vets at my job did, but then again, I almost lost it at this guys armchair diagnosis.

That's the internet for ya. It seems that the "cool" thing to do for most people is assume they have aspergers if they have the slightest amount of social awkwardness or personality quirk.

People in general want something to blame for being socially awkward, so they give themselves some disease so they can pass it off and act like no one can blame them for their own actions. The plight of people who really have a disease tend to get harder when you have a bunch of people claim they have it for convenience sake.

It's just another reason to feign sympathy in a time when people will welcome most anything with open arms.

This seems to be something that happens often, but I've never heard anyone say they had it before.
Granted, I'm not part of some huge social circle or go out and meet people often, but still.

I've never really heard of anyone diagnosing themselves with that, but when you consider how expensive doctor visits can be, it's not the majority of people who "self-diagnose" themselves' fault. Sure there's people who do it for sympathy, but if everyone got looked at for every thing, there'd be a lot of busy doctors out there.

My daughter (now 11) was diagnosed by a licensed psychologist several years ago. It irks me that so many people like to use the internet tests as a means to diagnose themselves just to justify their own personal flaws. Someone with a legit case of AS has a number of very real problems that gets undercut by so many people claiming that they have AS. Why accommodate a child with AS if so many normal people "have" it? It clearly can't be a big deal.....except it really, truly is. My daughter's struggles to adapt to her social situation (i.e., elementary school) so upset her that she has suffered from very real depression and has made more than a few comments over the last years about wanting to hurt herself and even wishing that she was dead. Children who are 9 years old should never state that they wished that they were dead.
If you diagnosed yourself via an internet test, either you have it and you should be seeing a real professional to get help ASAP or you need to just accept that you are normal enough and quit using it as an excuse. If I took the test I would also get results that suggest that I might have it. You know what? I DON'T. I see first-hand what it is like to have it and I know that while I may be a little socially awkward I am normal enough. I will deal with my own personal flaws just fine. If you think you have it either get real help or accept that if you don't need real help you are just a normal human being with normal flaws. Don't water down the understanding of what this very real condition is.

I was diagnosed with asperger's by a doctor when I was about 11 years old, and even I doubt the validity of the syndrome itself. The best "cure" for asperger's is experience and improvement in interacting with other people, as well as gaining self-awareness of your thoughts, words, and actions. I.E., learning what NOT to do when talking to other people. Well thats what I find amusing when I was diagnosed with it at the age of 15 the doctor pretty much told me that is extactly what I need to be doing not this whole use it as excuse to be a rude and annoying wanker that those mother f***ers who claim to have it think it is.

I can't believe people just completely jumped over Social Anxiety and went all the way to Aspergers. I guess SA isn't "cool" enough for them.

The problem is that people interpret Asperger's as "Be An Asshole And Get Away With It" Syndrome. So they act like assholes, especially on the internet, and say "I have Asperger's!" as an excuse.
Asperger's isn't even supposed to be diagnosed by psychiatrists anymore. Their board pretty much took it out of consideration. I think it's just rolled into high-functioning autism now.

It is all just Autism when DSM V comes out.

Even if he was clinically diagnosed rather than having taken an internet test that gave him a result he was likely trying to get why would he just go around telling everyone? I can see why somebody that is actually neurologically atypical would be pissed with folks that just want a built-in excuse for social awkwardness.

I was diagnosed as a child but did not find out until I was 15. I struggled immensely through childhood and adolescence, but when I found out suddenly the world made sense and I was able to accommodate my condition. I looked up the symptoms and tried my best to work around them or against them. Now I have an OK social life but still suffer from extreme shyness and introversion and tend to lose people in conversation. I'm not ashamed of my condition so I don't hide it and only mention it when appropriate but I work my best to fit in.
Out of interest, I took the online test and got a 42 out of 50, so according to the test I'm like super-Aspie.
I don't approve of people just using the term as an excuse to behave like a dick. While Aspies suffer from a lack of empathy with other people, you can still have a code of morals and learn what things are or are not socially acceptable. Some things I don't understand why they are or aren't acceptable and I may even find them illogical, but I abide by them to make life easier.

To them, it's a "get out of being considered a douchebag free" card. Of course, to the rest of the world, it's just an excuse that confirms them as douchebags (also, making you act like a dick isn't what Asperger's does).
And naturally, they fell it isn't necessary to have it confirmed by a psychologist because they "obviously" have all the symptoms. And of course, since it's a disease, it's only logical that they'd do nothing to solve it, because the best way to deal with diseases, especially mental ones, is to leave them untreated.
I've actually met people who made similar claims (not Asperger's but other convenient mental diseases) and I feel no remorse in telling them they're full of shit to their face.
And no, the Internet isn't to blame, it didn't make them assholes.
