There are 5 old women in the Power Instinct series, though Oshima only shows up in PI2. And the Belti sisters only show up in Senzou Kuyou, which like NOBODY ever got to play.
I think the problem is that for the most part, Japan's idea of an "old woman" is "26 years old".

For those who don't know Japanese shops tend to throw away the Christmas cakes that aren't sold by Christmas(the 25th), as those remaining cakes are seen as undesirable. Same kind of thing is applied to Japanese women. Women who are over 25 and single are seen as undesirable in Japanese culture and have of course become to be nicknamed Christmas Cakes. Basically they are like spinsters.

Cause the average gamer would rather play as some early 20's hottie with bouncy boobs

Because it makes it harder to sell bikini DLC (although I'm sure there's a market for it).

I think a part of it is because a lot of fighting games are made by companies that are based out of Japan, and everybody knows that Old Japanese Ladies give zero ****s and would destroy any youngster stupid enough to cross them. Thanks, Gaijin Smash! And considering how utterly broken some bosses are in fighting games as it is, do you want to just crush any and all hope people would have?

Helga in Clayfighter may have been oldish. Bit of a stretch I admit there really aren't many.

Well, there was that one Dame Judi Dench themed FPS developed by Infinity Ward. Sadly, it was shelved indefinitely due to an excessive amount of graphic violence, nudity, and lack of dogs.

Why don't they compromise and put in someone who's middle aged, i.e. looks like they're in their early to mid 50's? They wouldn't be a wrinkly old bag but they also wouldn't look like they just hit puberty, either.

Because I don't think they have any reason to compromise on something like that. Demand isn't high, so they don't see a point. It's not like most girls in fighting games look like they "just reached puberty". Maybe if they were eating a lot of chicken or something.

Hahaha. I was exaggerating. There's not really a demand on most fighting game characters. Was there much of a demand for a ninja in Mortal Kombat who existed solely to make a Prince joke? No, but he's still canon. Fighting games have so many characters (and so many duds) that throwing in something that's so easy to execute and so rarely implemented should be a no-brainer.

Because depressingly, to this day, girls in video games have to be sexy. Not so much ridiculously proportioned, comic-book character, virtually naked eye candy any more - but they have to be sexy. And old isn't sexy, apparently.

It is an injustice, 'cause it ties into a bigger point about lazy-ass character design and representations in our media...but I know ain't nobody trying to deal with that. It's just more interesting patterns that point to the same problem really.

Eh, I don't see it as a problem. But to each their own.

It's called balance, people. Have you ever tried to fight an old woman in real life? I did and I got my ass handed to me
