Pardon my ignorance, but are the playoffs still broken up by conferences? I remember during the initial realignment discussion that the league would re-seed when it got to the final four, and we could have an two teams from the East squaring off in the Stanley Cup Finals. Is that still the case, or is it as it has been, wherein the champion of the East will play the champion of the West for the Cup?

Okay, so here's how it works: - Top three in each division are automatic playoff teams - The next two best records regardless of division are "Wild Card" playoff teams - The #1 seed in the conference plays the lower of the two Wild Cards - The #2 seed plays the other - The #2 and #3 teams in each division play each other and are seeded #3-6 based on point total

Wait there's only 6 teams in each conference that make the playoffs now? No, it's 8. The top three from each division get the auto. bid. The last two spots go to wild card teams.

Quick prediction time out of the East: Atlantic 1. Boston 2. Ottawa 3. Detroit 4. Montreal 5. Florida 6. Toronto 7. Tampa Bay 8. Buffalo Metropolitan 1. Pittsburgh 2. NYR 3. New Jersey 4. Washington 5. NYI 6. Columbus 7. Philadelphia 8. Carolina The fascination with picking New Jersey last will be the biggest miscalculation by traditional prognosticators this year. Good chance that the Islanders would make it in the playoffs while the Habs miss, too. As for the West, my Spidey-sense is starting to lean toward St. Louis. Florida 5th? You crazy
