I would argue that there were celebrities of the time who were bigger than the athletes the fella named aswell. I would also say Al Capone was a bigger deal than Ruth even back then somehow.
The Athletic Culture that he speaks of was created as a result of Hollywood culture. If anything, sport stars nowadays have gone up a par to the A-Listers, not down, if only because of the shrinkage of Hollywood, and the rapid expansion of player wages.

I have a huge issue with people trying to blame society for what Aaron Hernandez is. Is violence glorified in society? Yes, but it kind of always has been. You have a lot of guys in sports and entertainment that legitimately came from way worse situations than Hernandez and they've been able to get away from that life. They may still use those experiences in music or be in movies dealing with similar issues, but they get away from that life. Eminem has some pretty violent raps, but he's done a damn good job getting his daughter, niece, and brother better lives.
If anything Aaron Hernandez is the byproduct of never being held responsible for his actions because he was good at football. I bet even now he thinks he's going to walk free.

People complain about how violent society has become, but stats seem to show that the violent crime rates in the US have been sliding downwards even as "culture" gets more violent.
So maybe those old days weren't so idyllic.

Does America have a violent culture? Yes. Is said culture to blame for Aaron Hernandez? No.
A huge part of the problem is the pedestal that athletes in general and football players in particular are placed upon. Somewhat ironically, whoever wrote the article is still giving Hernandez a pass because he can run fast and catch a football. If this was a random thug that killed Odin Lloyd would there be an argument that a violent culture created him? Doubtful, it would more likely be that the killer was an outright criminal and always has been and always would be. The old 'you can take the guy out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the guy' theory, but suddenly factor in the ability to play in the NFL and it's societies fault. Nice try.
As for Jay-Z glorifying his past. There's a big difference between 'glorifying' ones past life as a drug dealer and telling about it. Jay-Z's raps are unabashedly autobiographical, just because one can't discern between autobiography and glorification doesn't make it the artists intention. Nor his fault should someone perceive it as such.
I'm pretty sure that Capone was always a bigger deal than Babe Ruth as well.
In short this writer fails in every conceivable manner.

I have always said this, if someone's excuse for the crime is it's society's fault for the urban culture, they can kiss my ass. Aaron Hernandez is a grown ass man and he should be treated as a grown up when judging what he "allegedly" did.

Edit: Well, except for America having a "violent culture" with violent crime down since peaking in 1991.

That article is a load of shit. It's nobody's fault but Hernandez. He didn't have to pick up a gun. Nobody forced him to. He chose to do it. Jason Whitlock can sod right off.

While violent crime may be down overall, society is still fascinated by violence, be it real or fantasy(i.e. movies, TV, media and so forth), which is part of the reason that various high profile trials are broadcast on TV. Honestly, it's probably a big part of why football is so popular, it's like modern day gladiators trying to impose their will on each other. Few are interested in perfect form tackles they're more interested in seeing guys get blown up with big hits, which the NFL will replay constantly all the while fining the guys that are responsible for it.

Is this even thinly veiled racism? Or just out-and-out racism? Either way, this is the most incredible use of "the kids are criminals because they listen to the rap music" argument that I've ever seen.

According to the Union-Tribune San Diego, it's "fairly common knowledge" that Ryan Mathews frequents bars and nightclubs "even at times and dates that show questionable judgment."

The Steelers are expected to approach Ben Roethlisberger about a contract extension next offseason. Rotoworld For some reason, I read that as "The Seahawks are expected...". Made me think of how weird it'd be if the roles were reversed, and, somehow, it was Big Ben in Seattle and Wilson in Pittsburgh.
