Not to tread old ground, but about the whole ad thing, it suprises me that ads seem to be the only revenue they seem to get. No sponsors or ads on the main site, no little "brought to you by" notice, no real store or shop to sell gear or such, nothing. Its like they dont know any other way to get money than Blip ads.

Only a select few can make it sustainable. There's also the question of the long term appeal of such genre, which is why the 50% of TGWTG who do live off ad revenue are struggling with AdBlocker now instead of 2 or 3 years ago, due to the declining viewer base they have. That Linkara video btw was poorly done, as he told people to ignore the adverts on blip and just let him gather the revenue from it. If I was a advertiser, why would I want to advertise on blip if thats what one of its top contributors attitude towards my product? Do you fast forward anything you record? And the userbase isn't decreasing, they're just becoming more aware of adblocker, and blip.tv is apparently gouging them on revenue (it used to be 50/50, apparently it's now something like 75/25). This is also why Spoony moved his videos to other hosts. Doug, Lyn and Todd don't have these problems because they have a set-pay contract. I do. And a lot of the shows I watch tend to get cancelled Also, userbase isn't decreasing? siteanalytics.compete.com/thatguywiththeglasses.com/Whilst I knew the numbers were decreasing, I wasnt aware it had shrunk below 100k. I would guess Blip knows its viewer-base is decreasing as well, that's why they're trying to maximise their profit from their videos. So if the audience has shrunk by 33% since last year, and your cake in the ad revenue has gone to 25%, you're going to suffer.

Some of them do, but not a lot. Linkara sells T-shirts and is putting out a DVD (granted, his quality is spotty enough these days as it is I certainly wouldn't risk paying to see his stuff, particularly given he's usually only good when covering mainstream material and that certainly wouldn't be on a DVD), Brad has his movies and the like and does sell ad space on his site plus he puts out so many videos a week he probably makes a lot more than most people there, think Phelous sells shirts too... That's about it as far as I know. While not related to the site anymore Spoony seems to do a ton of convention appearances and has started selling an app.

But to play devil's advocate, if you watch Linkara or Snob or even Video Games Awesome with any regularity, you would be going to their own site to check for updates VGA has gone up on page views, global ranking, number of viewers etc over the last 3 months www.alexa.com/siteinfo/videogamesawesome.com#trafficstatsSame with Linkara's site and even cinema snob has gone up, but also has page decrease where the other two do not. Just because TGWTG has droped does not mean that the individual sites of the reviewers has droped too.

Yeah, snob who this is about generally reviews movies from the seventies. But really only looks at exploitation films of any era really.
Linkara, who was also mentioned, does comic books of all decades too.
Todd in the shadows reviews todays pop music and occasionally looks into the careers of one hit wonders.
Lumping them all into the "remember the 80s/kids these days" camp is unbelievably misguided.

Oancitizen also reviews movies from all eras, and in fact seems to be mostly reviews relatively recent stuff. Same thing for Diamanda Hagan. Same thing for Benett the Sage. Same thing for Suede. Same thing for JesuOtaku. Same thing for Phelous. And then you have people like Angry Joe who ONLY review stuff that just came out (oddly enough, Joe is actually rarely angry too). Heck, even the Nostalgia Critic has been reviewing more modern works recently. Honestly, I'd say only a small minority of reviewers stick to old stuff.

Snob's the only person bar the Nostalgia Critic I enjoy from TGWTG. Especially Brad Tries, always fun to see the weird shit he gets sent.

The Snob is by far the best of all of "those" type of reviewers on the internet. Most consistent and seemingly the least pretentious. TGWTG is incredibly hit and miss, has always been... AVGN is more well rounded and consistent, but he has really slowed down over the last couple of years. Linkara is amusing for a short period of time... obnoxious performer, that guy. Completely obnoxious.
So yeah... I'm a supporter of Brad Jones and what he does on the site... can't say I've ever been interested in his 80s Dan skits or had any interest to see any of his movies, but I love the regular Catch Up reviews, of course the Cinema Snob series itself (I love to go through his reviews and look at all the random/obscure movies I've seen that I never thought would be reviewed on this popular of a platform), and the midnight screenings are ALWAYS great... unless they love the movie, haha.
Edit: and YES, Brad Tries is probably my favorite of all of his videos. Especially love the obscure and foreign soda reviews.
