I was just watching Observe and Report for the third time or so and it got be thinking about this. Observe and Report was a funny dark comedy that I'm glad I took a chance on and bothered to watch. However, it's poster was nearly identical to the much different Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Even worse I think Observe and Report came out AFTER Paul Blart: Mall Cop so that anyone who hated that movie wouldn't even give Observe and Report a chance.

Detroit Rock City....it was marketed as "hey its KISS! everybody loves KISS! come see the new KISS movie starring KISS!!!" when in truth they were only in the very end of the film had no dialog, it was a great coming of age type of movie, very very funny and very well written. going to the kiss concert was just part of the plot, far from being a kiss movie.

Which is a shame since it was a masterpiece and making Taxi Driver into a comedy is just genius. Plus Jody Hill might be the most underrated directors and screenwriters in Hollywood

But if you were a KISS fan, it fell into the "bad movies marketed very well" category.

I definitely have to agree, Observe and Report is a tragically underrated movie. Very, very funny. Seth Rogen excellent in it.

The fact that Fight Club was marketed during WWF programming as a movie about fighting is my go-to example for bad movie marketing.

Titan AE. A unique and fun, but rather adult oriented animated feature that was marketed to families for whatever reason.

John Carter was not a good movie by any means, but it had a truly terrible ad campaign.

Josie and the Pussycats, it was a movie ripping late 90's early 2k's to shreds, and they marketed it directly to the people they made fun of and not to the non-mainstream music fans. Every punk rocker I have known has loved that movie.

Bucky Larson.
I've heard that the movie was god awful but holy shit, the annoying advertising didn't even let me give the movie a chance.

It is all tongue in cheek and making fun of the music industry. DuJour alone is brilliant. Also, Rachael Leigh Cook in cat ears is pretty much my fetish.

Big Trouble in Little China. Marketing campaign was so poor even Kurt Russell's family had no idea when the movie was out in theatres, also not helped by the fact that producers didn't understand the concept of the film - the protagonist was a bumbling goof and the sidekick was the real hero of the story.

Didn't The Cabin in the Woods intentionally do that? I heard they had the trailers look like a generic horror flick about dumb teens going to party, do drugs and have sex only to end up killed by zombies in order to make the numerous twists and subversions that much more surprising.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. could've done great but they released it the same weekend as Expendables.
