Must be Yoshihiro Takayama. I believe those are the AJPW Triple Crown, NWF Heavyweight, GHC Heavyweight and the old IWGP Heavyweight title belts respectively. Hawtness Takayama. Yoshihiro Hennig? Curt Takayama?

Looking back at these I really wish it wasn't just Aries with mainstream national/global exposure right now...I thought all four of these guys would be huge, funnily enough I thought Evans would be a megastar by now just because he seemed to fit with the mid-2000's pop culture more than the other guys. Funny how it all works out. The thing is Evans could of been huge in ROH TNA or DGUSA, but those companies had no chance of offering as much money as he makes in AAA. And that is how pathetic the state of ROH/TNA is, that's the place where Evans could of made as much of as impact as Shelly/Strong/Aries, but how could he stay there when he makes tons more in AAA. Sure if he wanted to be the next guy to breakthrough to the main event in TNA like AJ, Aries and Sabin before him, he could of in a heartbeat, but why should he take a serious pay cut, just for the sake of being a world champ in a company with the mainstream respect/presence (This is the same company that RVD,Angle,Nash and Christian were on TV every week, but were still asked by fans why they don't wrestle anymore) and creative track record as TNA. Everyone was saying after Destination X 2011, "Oh why isn't TNA signing Jack, he was the most over guy on the PPV." I guarantee 1 of 2 things happened, either TNA offered him a ridiculously small contract or they knew not to even bother because they knew they couldn't match AAA. Who is the one they signed out of Aries, Ki and Evans. Aries, because he was the cheapest they could offer. Compare Aries' situation at the time to Ki and Evans at the time. Aries was out of ROH, he got rejected from Tough Enough (was stating they he was to retire), and Austin had never had any major following or interest from Japan or Mexico. Ki was hot, too hot for TNA, even if they didn't want to hire him because of his attitude, they could never match what New Japan was giving him, on top of prospects making some local cash in DGUSA and Evolve for Gabe (not long after the PPV TNA starts to stop guys on the roster being taped for indie DVDs which would of made Ki worthless in Gabe's two companies). Evans doesn't even need to work in Japan (and they want him, he is just as over there as he is in Mexico) because he is the man in AAA, i have never seen a "gringo" as over as he is in AAA in the last 10 years. Sure things worked out for Austin, but the whole reason he was the guy who they hired wasn't based on who they wanted and who was the most over, it was because he was the only one they could afford and knew he had nowhere else to go. Shelly is making decent waves in New Japan, so he is the only one close to matching "success" to Evans, if you want to mention Sydal then that is a variable. But how do you measure success? Evans who is/was the hottest thing going in AAA, and doesn't need to even work the states these days, Shelly who is one of NJ's go to guys for the juniors, Roddy who has never been anything outside of PWG/ROH but has had a stellar run with all belts in ROH and is the measuring stick in both ROH & PWG. or Aries who has no other interest from anywhere other than TNA, is seen on national TV every week, was a World Champion in the no.2 company, but then again chosen over Ki and Evans (who were more over at DX 2011) because he was the only one they had a chance to keep.

That was an amazing post. I disagree on your measurement of just how successful Aries is as far as his legacy to this point and his star at the moment but I don't even care. This might sound lame but thanks for going to the effort, good read and in many ways you're right.

I'm not sure I could disagree with this post anymore. Sure Evans has achieved success in AAA and I'm pleased for him but to suggest he is the most successful member of Gen Next is ludicrous. TNA knew what they were doing when they did Destination X, if you look back at the Impact's building up to the show and the PPV itself it's pretty self evident that the plan all along was to sign Aries. I'm not sure of the finances in AAA so maybe Evans would've had to take a paycut to come to TNA but you think Evans could have been World Champion in TNA?! No chance in hell. There is a reason Aries and Shelley were the leaders of Gen Next. There is a reason when they decided to have a Gen Next tag team win the titles that it was Strong and Aries instead of Strong and Evans who had teamed together far more frequently during Aries' singles run. There is a reason Austin Aries is a 2 time ROH World Champion. There is a reason that Alex Shelley got multiple shots at the ROH World Title. It's because they are better than Jack Evans. Sure Evans was over with that Destination X crowd, potentially the most over man in the match. The reason? Because of his finisher and his other daredevil antics. People see Jack Evans as this awesome spot monkey who can do crazy shit. No way he would be well received as a World Champion. Aries was chosen over Ki and Evans because he was the best in that group of talent not because he was "the only one they had a chance to keep". Would TNA and ROH like to bring Jack Evans onto their roster full-time? I'm pretty sure ROH would like to have him back although I don't think they'd push him any higher than as a midcarder. TNA? I'm not even sure would sign the guy. They certainly wouldn't be offering him a big salary akin to the one Aries is probably on given his success in the company. I just can't get over this utterly ludicrous notion of yours that Evans could have been a World Champion in TNA. It's seriously mindblowing.

Also on the Evans subject, why does everyone (including Konnan) talk about how nobody's making good money in AAA right now? We'll never see their paychecks to know the truth, but my guess is Aries is making considerably more as a pro wrestler in TNA right now than Evans does in Mexico. Probably Shelley as well, in Japan.

Never let the truth get in the way of a good internet message board burial of someone affiliated with pro wrestling.
