£54 for two rounds? The f***.
They must have been on some wine. London is expensive, but jeez. Maybe they were having £13.50 cocktails, which is expensive but you can slap any price on a cocktail I suppose, if it's there on the menu at that price and you choose to pay it then more fool you.
I've gone off on a tangent now, but to put that in perspective I went to a "Jamie's Italian" the other day (one of Jamie Olivers restuarants) and only paid £42 for a starter and a main each, 2 drinks and a tea. I paid as I normally do but at least my girlfriend always offers.

My general rule of thumb is that if you ask me out, I'd expect you to pay for it. If I ask you out, I'd expect to pay for it. If we both decide to go out, I'd expect to split the tab.
In any event, you should work that out before you start spending the money. If you want to split the bill with your date, mention it ahead of time so you're not forced to steal her cell phone.

Weird story. But even as someone who always insists on splitting (or rather, alternating... I buy dinner, you buy the movie tickets, etc), I have to say that if someone gave the waiter their credit card and started a tab, and didn't clarify to me that they wanted to split the cost, I'd probably assume they were picking it up. Otherwise, he would've started a tab for himself and I would've started a tab for myself. But then, I also would've clarified that in the beginning, by offering to start a tab for myself.
Both were showing some incorrect dating etiquette, I think.
