Are there too many comic book movies?

I get what you are saying. I still think that last year and two years ago had a good amount released. Look at 2011, they had "Thor," "Green Lantern" and "Captain America" released in a matter of months. Same with last year and having "The Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises" come out. Regarding this year, I wonder if a lot of people knew that "R.I.P.D." is a comic book as well.

Eh, not for me. You could argue there's too much focus on superhero movies by major studios as opposed to the wider range of comic properties, but the superhero film's become its own genre now, and even then they're not suffocating the multiplexes. Plus they're not the only genre that can crack the $400 global gross threshold anymore.

There are a fair share, the thing is that you'd never know a lot of them were comic book movies, because the medium is so varied. Hellboy 2 was 2008, RIPD was this year, so there are two from Dark Horse. Dredd was released last year. Cowboys and Aliens was 2011, and Scott Pilgrim was 2010.

Are we equating comic book movies with superhero movies here? Because I don't think one can credibly say that there are too many movies based on comic books any more than one can say there are too many movies based on novels or plays. But I do think one can credibly say that too many movies featuring comic book superheroes are being made, and I would be inclined to agree. I would rather see more superhero television series so that the long-term storyline and character development of the original comics doesn't have to be shoehorned into a two-hour action movie.

Calling comics lame is a little weird as one is impugning an entire artform. It's like saying music is lame because you don't like country, or books are lame since you don't like biographies.

Superheroes are only one kind of comics. Granted, it's been the horse pulling the cart since the 60's, and mores the pity (I like em, but diversity of form is always good) and not liking that type of comics is perfectly valid, but shitting on all sequential art, especially when virtually every movie that has any sorta action has storyboards, is a bit odd.

Yeah, its definitely been ramping up lately. Studios are trying to capitalize on superhero popularity for sure.

There is a reason the superhero films are released in such a small window relative to each other. Ready for it? They are made by different studios.

If every superhero film was made by the same studio, there would be a point to this complaint. However they aren't. A similar thing happens with animated films guys. Disney will release an animated film one month, Dreamworks will release another one the following month, then some other studio will release one the month after that.

Same thing happens with superhero films. Disney releases a new entry in the MCU, then WB releases a new DC character film, and then either Sony releases a new Spider-Man or Fox releases a new X-Men.

Comic book/graphic novel movies? Not at all, you can never have too many I'd say.
Comic book superhero movies? I wouldn't mind superhero movies if they put out ones that made any kind of sense and they didn't seem like the same damn movies to where I'm sick of it.

Like, I'm never going to believe there was a demand for a Hal Jordan Green Lantern movie. John Stewart Green Lantern? Sure, because that's the one everyone saw in that long-running Justice League show. Even with the Hal Jordan movie, they didn't even know what they were doing with villains. It's either Sinestro or Star Sapphire, because nobody gives a shit about Hector Hammond.

And you know what? I'm just going to say it, for a lot of these movies if you can't support a solo book then shouldn't nobody bother with making a movie behind you. I'm looking at YOU, Ant-Man. We shouldn't even be talking about a Black Widow movie, to be honest.

Honestly, it's sort of flabbergasting that the only thing we've seen of Static since the DCAU ended was a small role on Young Justice. Considering all the live action shows they've had (and even having Cyborg on Smallville) aimed at the teen audience, he'd be a perfect fit. It's like no one but Greg Weisman remembered that Milestone existed.

Dude, I marked out hard when he even used Icon and Rocket for Young Justice and kept in that she was a teenage mom.
It looked like had the show gone on we would've gotten a lot more out of the Milsestone characters, but...

You know, from everything I've heard the impressions a lot of people in the know got is the only reason DC brought Milestone in when they did was because they wanted to use Static.

Now, if they'll do that to use Static you'd think that would translate into a bigger role in things? A live-action movie? A "reboot" comic that doesn't suck, but whatever. I hope DC actually did lose the rights to use the Milestone things because all they've done is ignore most of it and completely botch the one character they supposedly wanted from the beginning.

Okay, let me just give some more input on this: Earlier I remembered reading rumors about a "Danger Girl" movie being in development, but in my opinion, most people wouldn't even know that it would be based on a comic book. I am sure that people would quickly dismiss a "Danger Girl" movie as a "Charlie's Angels" knock-off trying to be Indiana Jones and James Bond. Though the comics pretty much are that, with attractive women being the heroines going on some spy missions and trying to retrieve some rare artifacts, but it's not a mainstream comic book and I really don't know if it would work on-screen. If it does get made, I'll still see it, but most people wouldn't know that it was a comic movie. The name may sound like a superhero comic, but it's really about spies.

Also, someone mentioned about TV shows based on comic books. Apart from any superhero shows, I can't think of too many that were out there. However, I do know that there was a TV show on Sci-Fi of "Painkiller Jane," another comic book series that isn't so mainstream. I have actually read comics of that character and she is mostly an anti-heroine with some special healing ability. The TV show, however, is mostly different from its source material. I have the DVD set of the whole series (It lasted for one season) and I can see how different it is from the comic series. I haven't watched the entire set, but I can say that I haven't been feeling the show so far. Anyway, I can see a movie being made out of this, but this is another comic book franchise that a lot of people wouldn't know is a comic, unless they watched the TV show, but of course, that didn't last.

Does Tales From The Crypt count? It was a comic book series long before the show ever came out, and the show was extremely long running back in the day.

Wait, Antman and Black Widow aren't worthy of movies since they themselves can't have much of an audience (which I can kind of agree with), but the Milestone characters are? MAYBE Static, but that's about it.

Hal Jordan, to the majority of comic fans, IS Green Lantern. Everyone else is secondary. Stewart did have a prominent role on the Justice League cartoons, but a few years in the spotlight ain't enough to really outweigh Hal who has is the "starter" to John's back-up. Though hell, the Green Lantern movie I would want would be an Alan Scott Forties period piece anyway.

I agree on Black Panther though, for character, setting etc, that'd be a fun/different superhero movie, and then you can have him be in the Avengers. Plus it might mean seeing a movie version of Klaw, who I've always loved.

I always assumed that Hal wasn't Green Lantern in the Justice League cartoons because they wanted a strong African-American character and, maybe even more importantly, they wanted to avoid any fan boy issues with using Kyle instead.
