I remember reading Mick Foley's book and him talking about how the WWE at the time invested money in Marc Mero. I was thinking who else did the WWE invest poorly in that they thought would be big money pay off?

I'd guess in the long run Mark Henry never paid off. He's doing MUCH better now but they invested a lot of money in him early on.

Lesnar's NJPW run was probably really expensive for them and he held up the belt for a while.

Not WWE but what about Bret Hart in WCW?
Sure, he had a couple of big matches but never reached the same popularity he had in the WWF and most of his WCW run he was Upper Midcard.
Heard he was making over a million dollars a year.

Why did they bury Mero so much?
I was watching some stuff from the Goldust feud when she really took off. JR seemed to really hate him and talk about how unpopular and terrible he was....like more than normal heel talk.

Heard he was making over a million dollars a year. He is a good example of someone they threw a lot of money at but did not use to their full potential. Some of it was bad luck, yeah, but it seemed odd how they used him as a heel there for a lot of it, when the natural inclination would have been to have him squarely against the nWo.

How much did they spend on Scott Steiner in 2003? He come to mind right away.

I forget who it was, but maybe Cornette, but a big problem with Mero was he was hired based on his performance as Johnny B. Badd. When he came to the WWF, he could not use that gimmick, and he was basically trained with that gimmick in mind, in WCW, so without it, he was somewhat lost. Beyond that, he was outshone by his wife, in ring(not due to any real skill on her part, but that's not the point) and out.

Mark Henry in a lot of ways. The WWE signed him to a Ten year contract in 96. It wasn't until AFTER that ten year deal before he became good, interesting, and well money. Yes he is now talented wise worth money but it took over Ten years to get him to be worth more than a mid Card at best talent. And a lot of times I felt he didn't belong in the company.

WCW but Lanny Poffo (never used once) and Swoll are just the tip of the iceberg I still think Lanny only got that deal to keep Randy happy. it wasn't about keeping him away from Vince or anything, it was just a favor for Macho. as for Swoll... well, the No Limit Soldiers in general were a big waste of money ("Rap is Crap" video aside). Why did they bury Mero so much? I was watching some stuff from the Goldust feud when she really took off. JR seemed to really hate him and talk about how unpopular and terrible he was....like more than normal heel talk. with Mero, from what I understand they gave him a huge deal only to discover after the fact that WCW owned the "Johnny B Badd" gimmick. without it, Mero was pretty much useless.

Vader springs to mind. Other than the match with HBK, not much came from that run.

You could say that Lesnar's original WWE run could be considered a big money bust since it was obvious they were planning on building the company around him for the future and he took off in two years.
