JR to me, could get anyone, even someone who preferred the heels, to want to root for the face to win.

You know who was really good? Lance Russell. Ol' Banana Nose himself. Lance Russell was so good, they had to get Jim Ross to play him in "Man On The Moon". The best of his time to play the best of all-time.

JR is by no means perfect, but if JR is not good, who the hell is?

He was a great announcer
WWE commentary has been piss poor since he stopped doing it.

Okay, ratetankmark is trolling us, it's official. It's less that and more trying to be "edgy" I feel. First got hints of it with the whole "ISN'T ANARKY GREAT? FIGHT DA POWAH!" schtick, and he's just been going downhill since. Also, I assume he edited his post so he didn't use the word drab, looking at the first two responses, which is hilarious.

Her certainly was a great announcer, in my opinion.
I don't know if he's the greatest of all time. But if I had to pick an all time broadcast team, he would damn sure be on it.

NWA/WCW era Jim Ross was as good of a straight, "make it seem like a sport" play-by-play man as you could ever ask for. Attitude era, "bah gawd, stone cold, government mule" spouting "Good 'ole JR" was still great at selling a match, but it was nothing to judge Jim Ross' skills by at all.
But then again, I'll go to my grave believing that all things considered, had he never even called a move correctly in his career, Vince McMahon would still be the greatest play-by-play commentator that ever lived. When I try to be objective, he edges out Gorilla Monsoon by about .00000001% of a margin, even if I'd personally rather listen to Gorilla.

One thing people don't give Vince enough credit for is he could sell anybody from Shawn Michaels to Henry Godwinn as if they were main event caliber talent.

I had just returned to wrestling in 97 and stuck with it through the entire attitude era, the merger and the beginning of the pc era. I really enjoyed JR's announcing because I felt like he genuinely cared about the product and wanted me to care. When he got excited it helped me to forget that this was scripted and just enjoy the show. Heenan was fantastic because really he's intelligent and can talk so fast your eyes spin. I don't remember Monsoon as well since i was a kid when he called it, I didn't even realize until years later that Vince had likely commentated on matches I watched as a kid.
Really when watching JR and King as an announce team what really bothered me was King. You know what I remember from King's attitude era commentary? PUPPIES! JR! PUPPIES! Admittedly I was rarely a fan of heel announcers, heel Cole was particularly terrible but still, JR is the guy I think of first when I think of wrestling commentators.

Maybe it's just me, but Vince's "WHADDAMANUEVER" negates whatever strengths he had in that role. If you're the guy calling the match, shouldn't you know what those moves are? Especially if the guy doing the play by play is also the owner of the company? Granted, Vince was very good at putting across the psychology of a match. Prime examples would be his mic work in '97 alongside JR and Lawler. But, I can't get past WHADDAMANUEVER enough to put Vince in Michael Cole's shoes let alone JR or Monsoon.

I think after rewatching episodes of SNME on youtube, the vince/ventura team really grew on me. JR is an amazing announce thats for sure. Don't get me started though on the whole going crazy on austin matches. I remember No Way Out 2003 when Austin came back. He hammed it up so much Calculon was begging for someone to stop the insanity on the acting. God rest his circuits lol
