The closest team to me geographically would be the Flames. So, does that answer things for you? Yeah but three hours away is barely local. And you have a WHL team. When you're twice their age and have to clean up after them, they lose a ton of appeal.

For me, in no way can TV replicate the atmosphere of watching a sporting event live. Witnessing everything happen in front of you, the good and the bad, make for an overall fun experience. That's one reason why I support my local teams (LA Lakers, Dodger). I don't support all local teams in my area (one per sport), but that's another story.
Though I can understand why some people support teams located far away. Either there's not one close by, it's wasn't a good time to become a fan when they got into the sport, or other stuff. That's fine. The one thing I can't stand are bandwagon fans. Just pick one team (or a few) and stick with 'em.

Sometimes, it's necessity. That's gonna change next season when Indy gets its own soccer team at long last.

I'm one of those people who sticks with the hometown teams (Tampa Bay in my case). When it comes to the Buccaneers and the Lightning, they were the first teams to which I was exposed as a kid, and I've always cheered them on even when they sucked. In baseball, I got hooked on the Atlanta Braves before the (Devil) Rays made their debut in 1998. My parents had lived in Atlanta before I was born and they liked the Braves in the best and the worst of times, so I caught that from them. And then Tampa Bay got the Rays, and since the two teams are in separate leagues and rarely face each other, I've been a huge fan of both teams from day one. Yes, even with all the Yankees and Red Sox fans in the area, I suffered through ten painful years of Devil Rays baseball. But the universe is now rewarding those of us who did.
I think, no matter where you are, there's one simple rule to follow. If you pick a team, especially when that team is doing well, stick with it. I'm with the majority in my disdain for bandwagon jumping champion chasers. To me, they're among the lowest forms of sports fan scum.
