Was the double-turn of Alberto Del Rio and Dolph Ziggler at Payback planned, or did Del Rio just get booed so heavily that WWE had to do the turn?

Yeah, from what I remember it was planned.

a face should never show that much aggression.

The commentators spent the match selling Ziggler's heart and fighting spirit and acting taken aback at how viciously Del Rio was exploiting Dolph's concussion. And these are the same spineless company shills who freak out when someone attributes a Harley Race move to Harley Race instead of Triple H.
So yes, it was planned.

I watched the match at a bar with no sound on and even I could tell it was planned. I'm sure the horrible scripted commentary that night would have given it away within minutes.

It was obviously planned, but the aftermath made everyone look like shit so I could see why one would think it wasn't.

I honestly don't know who came off worse because of the turn.
I mean despite how badly he's been booked recently, I feel like Ziggler is still pretty popular. Also despite pretty strong booking, it seems like no one really cares about Del Rio anymore, which is a shame considering his face run for the most part took off a lot better than expected.
The double switch just seemed to kill both guys in the long term.

A face probably wouldn't kick a concussed guy in the head repeatedly, so yeah, probably.

Of course not.
Del Rio broke character and started shootin' on an injured Ziggler by targeting his head.
Ryback was scheduled to win the WWE title too, but the darned ambulance top gave way. Darn it.

After the match Ziggler was over as a face, and Del Rio was not over at all. Guess which one got a push??

I don't like the guy, but in the interest of honesty that was the one time Del Rio really was over. He got legitimate heat for what he did to Dolph. And then he blew it by remaining the same boring guy ever since.

It was Chicago. They know what crowds love guys like Ziggler. And they knew that Del Rio was rapidly losing steam as Mex Luger.

OK. I see. I have an add-on question:
Were there any plans on the double-turn before Ziggler got a concussion?

From the news that came out a little after, and looking at how the whole things was booked going forward, I think they were always going to do the double turn after they realised how much more popular Ziggler was. The concussion angle just helped them get there. The only problem is they decided to do the turn for the sake of pushing Del Rio as heel instead of building a real angle and feud between the two.

It was clearly planned, if only because of the pro Ziggler commentary throughout the match.
