I finally beat Max Payne 3 the other day and it got me thinking. Does anyone have it worse than him? As a video game character that the gamer plays as, he has been through more crap in the three games personally than any other main character in a video game series.
Can you think of anyone who personally had it worse than Max Payne?

I'd definitely say Max is up there. Nice to see him come out on the other side happy though.

I can't think of anybody who has had it worse than Max Payne. First game, he loses his whole family. Second game, he might've been crooked because he worked with some Russian mobster and then even had a brief fling with a female assassin, he even killed his superior officer, who we later found out was crooked. The third game, the flashbacks pretty much tell that his life was never good and it never got better while in Brazil.

I mean he still is as messed up as he was when the third game started and never seems to get things together. That's one thing I really liked about 3, during the cut scenes with the blur and color messing up to show how out of it he had become.

Isaac, From the Binding of Isaac, and it is probably not even close, for most of them.

What about the protagonists of the Silent Hill games? I still haven't played them, but I have read a lot about James Sunderland from the second game and he didn't have that great of a life. Also, Daniel Lamb from Manhunt 2 is an example of this.

I hadn't even thought about James from Silent Hill 2. And it makes it worse if you get the ending with the dog. Just makes you go "what the f***!?"

Ryo Hazuki is pretty much screwed. Father killed, decides to go chasing a man who would murder him in seconds, only to never actually find him, doesnt bother going to school and wastes his days away buying little toys, playing darts in the local arcade and being told to get lost by strangers in the street whenever he asks for help. Not to mention his friends leaving him (tom and Nozomi), never cleans or changes his clothes, does not eat..quite a pathetic guy.
Cant be pleasent being Solid Snake either.

Yeah, I liked that, especially when you go into the Favelas after he's shaved his head and kicked the booze, he's going through withdrawl, so you get a butt load of distortion throughout. Great game though, love the story and visual style, as well as the game play. IMO, best TPS of the generation.

Just about everybody from Eternal Darkness.
"You" from Uninvited. You can be a total klutz and kill yourself in numerous moronic ways. You also have the distinct misfortune of getting into a car wreck with your little sister just outside the haunted home of an evil Occultist.
Spiders. Victorian Lady Skeletons. Cookie Monsters.

Solid Snake's life is pretty f***ing terrible in MGS4 alone. I'm not even sure I could explain half of it without a few paragraphs of context so it made sense.

Max Payne really has it hard. Commander Shepard also has a rough life.

Heather Mason from Silent Hill 3. Her only family was murdered and she has to go through a nightmarish, hellish landscape only to find out that she's a pawn in this cult's plan. She also vomits up a fetus at one point.
But I think Alex Shepherd has it the worst of the Silent Hill protagonists. He has to delude himself into thinking he was in the military, because he inadvertently killed his little brother and was sent off to an insane asylum. All the while, he has to deal with the town's major families murdering their own children as a sacrifice to the cult.
Sherry Birkin also deserves a mention. Her father mutated to save himself, then injected her with the virus. She was saved, but didn't get to see her saviors again for decades, instead getting experimented on. Then, she more or less was forced to become a soldier in the war against the bio threat.

Chell from Portal. Used as a test subject by an evil computer with false promises of cake and generally just being used as a puppet by everybody she meets.

When we learn of Raiden's back-story in MGS2, it can very well be summed up that his life was not great either.

Commander Shepard.
In the span of three games they die... twice! At least you get to bang a psychopath along the way!
