I'm not buying the "It's a tribute and besides it's someone else who did it" explanation that seems to be a mish-mash of the top two go-to damage control excuses for artists who tried to be edgy but got more backlash than they expected, especially since as others mentioned, the song has otherwise nothing to do with the Challenger disaster.

She ought to apologize. That's a lousy thing to do to those families for the sake of a throwaway moment in a pop song. At worst, you could accuse her of being clumsy and missing the mark, but certainly not a ghoul. I don't know where you're getting ghouls from. I said she ought to apologize, because she did a callous and thoughtless thing. There are lots of people in the world who do callous and thoughtless things, are called out for it, and admit that they were wrong. It's not wholesale condemnation of everything someone is as a person to criticize them when they do something that hurts somebody else.

It's a good thing Beyonce used that sample. Otherwise people might forget that those astronauts are dead.
There's no more fitting tribute to the Challenger crew than a video featuring Beyonce having fun at a theme park riding roller coasters.
My guess is that her producers simply found an audio clip they thought sounded cool, and used it without having the slightest clue where it was from, and when they realised what it actually was, they scrambled and released this ludicrous statement.

Malicious, no. Callous, yes. Careless also works, but careless also kind of implies to me that she had a bunch of clips lying around and accidentally used this one instead of the one she meant to use, or that she picked this up without knowing what it was. I don't think that's the case, obviously; she isn't incompetent. I think she used it knowing what it was, as she says. And if you know what it is, you can't help but know that it will hurt the families to hear it on the radio, because it will remind them of a very personal tragedy. But because you don't share that tragedy, or those feelings, you don't care enough to use a different clip or not use the clip at all. And that's callous.

I think it's more the way they tried to squirm out of it by saying its a tribute and it was someone else who did it guv honest
It's a mistake, people make mistakes and whilst silly I don't think anyone was arranging a lynch mob so just say sorry, didn't intend to trivialise the event, remove the audio from future copies and that'd be the end of it
