What's wrong with WWE wanting to be more than just a wrestling company? It's not as if they're about to phase out Raw, Smackdown or any of their PPVs. And this myth that they're trying to drive hardcore fans away is just that, a myth. It's because they are a wrestling company. Everything they do derives from wrestling. They will never be regarded as anything else. "We make movies..." "..." "..."

See, all of you people do not understand how the business world works. See, you can look at this great, full-length alternative uniform coat I am wearing that is 100% humanely-raised animal-fur, you can look at my wide-brimmed personal shade receptacle, and see that I am extra-fly as the smoothest professional matchmaker in this area. I am the personal booking agent for the flyest array of professional sexual surrogates that any person could ever hope to procure to meet.

And this myth that they're trying to drive hardcore fans away is just that, a myth. Nothing wrong with it, but it's disingenuous. They are a wrestling company, plain and simple. They've tried other things--bodybuilding, football, movies. None of it has worked. They hate the stigma that comes with being a wrestling company--a stigma that they helped create--so they want to say "Hey, we're not wrestling. We're entertainment." In spite of this, no matter how hard they try, they're still a wrestling company that makes all of its money off of wrestling. They call it sports entertainment...but it's the same thing. They're pretending to be something that they're not. It's absurd by its very nature. They're far from the only company that's done this. Pro wrestling by it's very nature IS a form of sports entertainment. If They hated being a wrestling company and didn't want to do wrestling anymore they'd simply get rid of the ring and fire all the wrestlers. Oh and wrestlers have been using the word "wrestling" on WWE programming. There's nothing wrong with a company wanting to expand into other things. If companies didn't do that, certain things like PlayStation and Xbox consoles, the iPhone (which I am typing this post on right now), and the McRib would not exist. WWE IS an entertainment company, but none of their side projects will ever take precedence over the wrestling product. I don't think WWE various endeavors are a convoluted plot to do away with pro wrestling. WWE is still "World Wrestling Entertainment".

Pro wrestling by it's very nature IS a form of sports entertainment. What are some others? That's why I find the term laughable. You don't hear the ice capades or the Harlem Globetrotters calling themselves "sports entertainment," like it's a real category. They just are what they are. "Sports entertainment" is the rebranding attempt of the No. 1 wrestling promoter to try to play down that he's a wrestling promoter.

Didn't UFC brand themselves as Sports Entertainment as well to get out from under some sport regulations or something?

If companies didn't do that, certain things like PlayStation and Xbox consoles, the iPhone (which I am typing this post on right now), and the McRib would not exist. WWE IS an entertainment company, but none of their side projects will ever take precedence over the wrestling product. I don't think WWE various endeavors are a convoluted plot to do away with pro wrestling. WWE is still "World Wrestling Entertainment". To reiterate: I never said they were doing to do away with pro wrestling. They have no intention of doing so. Sports entertainment is pro wrestling. It's not anything different. WWF was Sports Entertainment and WCW was Pro Wrestling--but they were the same thing. That's the ridiculous part. The WWE changed the main term but didn't change anything about their product to warrant that. Calling Wrestling "Sports Entertainment" is disingenuous, buzzword marketing. I also never said that the other endeavors were a convoluted plot to get rid of wrestling. It's not. They would like it if pro-wrestling wasn't their main bread-and-butter, though. They'd be able to diversify their revenue stream and that's a good thing for any business. Wrestlers using the word "wrestling" doesn't matter for the most part. They use that because it pops the crowd and they sound rebellious. Why does it get a pop? Because the fans think that it's ridiculous to call pro wrestling--sports entertainment. It doesn't really matter much because on the corporate level the WWE will still be "Sports Entertainment" for the rest of the conceivable future. Though an important point about that is that it helps shows that the workers consider themselves to be "wrestlers" instead of "sports entertainers". I don't think any of them ever said when they were growing up, "Man, I want to be a Sports Entertainer someday." In the same vein, there probably aren't even a handful of fans who say, "Boy Johnny-Boy, I think we should get tickets to the Sports Entertainment even tonight." or "Hey Lisa, lets watch some Sports Entertainment tonight. John Cena's so dreamy--he's my favorite Sports Entertainer." It's a largely bogus term used by a company that has, for decades, been insecure about the product that they're selling, especially when they're dealing with other companies in Hollywood and whatnot who turn down their nose at wrestling. They also originally changed it so they could skirt around local state regulations. Instead of calling something what it really is they created another term to try and alter perceptions. They're pretending to be something they're not. As I said, by its very nature it's funny and disingenuous. Situations like that exist to be mocked. As I've shown in previous posts, they're FAR from the only major company to do so, it's fairly common. Back on topic:Locke Cole: I'm not a thief, I'm a treasure hunter.

WWE is still "World Wrestling Entertainment". I agree with your post 100% but technically WWE doesn't stand for World Wrestling Entertainment anymore, they changed that a year or two ago. Same way KFC no longer legally stands for Kentucky Fried Chicken.

True. My first job was at Target and that's what they requested. We couldn't say customer, we had to say guest. Ah, nice to see another former Target Team Member on here. Not co-worker or fellow employee--team member. "Can I help you find something?" Yep let's not forget "Hardlines 4" and "Would you like to apply for a Target RedCard today?"
