So I've been watching Zyuranger. Im not going to derail this into aSentai discussion, as we have a thread for that. I'm using this as a comparison. Burai, by himself, to me, is...justnot that interesting. So what is it about Tommy that made him so damn awesome? Jason Frank, at least at that point, was definitely NOT the best actor on the show, though was probably the best martial artist. So what was it about Tommy? What made him so damn awesome? Keep in mind that I say this as a completely unabashed Tommy Mark. I think it is because honestly he actually enjoyed it where as the others from numerous either rumors or legit feelings towards the show the others were just there to do a job and it wasn't something they cared much for and to me that translates to what comes off onscreen JDF was enjoying himself and wanted to be entertaining.

Keep in mind that I say this as a completely unabashed Tommy Mark. He had a great start, he was a badass, could kick all the other rangers asses and had the whole cool bad boy thing down well. Since he was separate from the group, he had his own identity thing, he was like Batman, the outsider who was just cooler than the rest of the group. JDF did a great job portraying that even as he became as good as the rest of them.

I was actually a fan of Burai anyway, but agreed on the Tommy thing. The "Green with Evil" arc in season 1 is superb in the way Tommy is introduced. New kid in school, rivals Jason in karate prowess, gets Kimberly's attention... and Rita, who conveniently has this sixth coin no one talked about until now.
He was the lone wolf-type character, who although he wasn't the leader of the team (yet), stood out. He had a slightly different more armoured look with a badass Zord that bore more than a passing resemblance to Godzilla. I've always been a fan of individual zords that could fight solo as well as combine with others. Of the original 7 Zords (counting Titanus), only the T-rex and Dragonzord could do this. Plus, he kicked Goldar's ass UNMORPHED before Goldar became a joke.
Aside from the lack of other original MMPR rangers coming back, Tommy Oliver really is the logical choice to lead the army of former rangers in the forthcoming Legend War. He's been the unique 6th ranger, he's been good been evil and been a ranger and a leader more than any other (although to be fair the format changed after In Space which meant that we never saw much of the other teams after their season was done). I also get the impression, at least now, that Jason David Frank loves being able to say he was one of the most iconic characters in a long-running franchise. God knows he milks it enough these days!

Quick question:
The footage and basis they use for Megaforce and Super Megaforce, was the original stuff pirate themed? It would explain the cutlass crosses on the chest.

Quick question: The footage and basis they use for Megaforce and Super Megaforce, was the original stuff pirate themed? It would explain the cutlass crosses on the chest. Yes. Megaforce, the rangers, zords & villains, come from Tensou Sentai Goseiger. The Goseiger were basically angels from another dimension. SUPER Megaforce, was based on Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, and yes, they were pirates who had come to Earth in search of the "Greatest Treasure in the Universe" which could only be obtained by collecting the greater powers of the 34 Super Sentai (every team before Gokaiger, who were the 35th). To do this they had to be given the powers of these various teams by former members. Which meant cameos aplenty. The big gimmick was the Gokiagers could transform into the previous Sentai teams by the use of keys (those little figurines in the Megaforce Command Center? Those are the keys). The Zangyack Empire have Saban decided to make Megaforce a hybrid of Gosieger and Gokaiger, with the pirate suits and powers becoming a power-up of sorts. The villains from both Goseiger & Gokaiger are now part of the same empire, with the leader of the Super Megaforce villains,Warz Gill(renamed Prince Vekar in Power Rangers) being the brother of Vrak from Megaforce. This has upset some die-hard Sentai purists, and people who were expecting a pirate-themed Power Rangers (which would actually be rather fun).

Hearing about Power Rangers and pirates reminds me of the great scene from Operation Overdrive with Brownbeard the pirate and Miratrix, Brownbeard asked for a jewel he was after in the typical pirate way of 'Give me back me booty' to which Miratrix simply replied 'I've got your booty right here' I don't know why but seeing such a serious character give a cheesy line like that is quite endearing, it's a bit like Zurgane from Ninja Storm would say lines in that deep, gruff voice of his, sometimes it's good to see serious villains be less serious just for the entertainment value.

I wish I had the money for the S.H. Figuarts figures. Those things look amazing. It's also a nice touch that although they pretty much package the same ones for Japan as they do elsewhere, the MMPR-specific ones will actually include a yellow ranger with a female body. Although it would be just as "show-accurate" whichever one they used: {Spoiler} SpoilerThat would complete the set of the Rangers. In addition, they put out an "Armoured" Red Ranger for those few episodes post-"The Green Candle" where Jason would use the Green Ranger's shield/dagger. There's also talk of a possible Lord-Zedd figure and an Armoured Black Ranger (which would pretty much be an MMPR-exclusive one, as it's from Zyu2 footage). Anyway, these things are cool but I neither have the space to put them or the money. I may pick up some of the Super Megaforce stuff when it starts to come out in the UK though, but I don't like how the sets of keys for the morpher that are being sold are in threes. For example, if you buy the Lost Galaxy pack, you will get red, blue and green but no yellow or pink. That seems a bit pointless really, but then maybe the actual target audience who will want these are young buys who don't want to be a girl... I was in Toys R Us in Cardiff Bay yesterday and they had a bunch of Megaforce and Samurai toys, and also some MMPR stuff like the legacy Morpher, which looked sweet and the Legacy Dino Megazord, also pretty badass. Expensive though.

My favorite minions are the bots from RPM. Not only was the noise they made creepy, but the one saving grace of Clash of the Red Rangers was that the Ranger Operators were shown to be 100 times stronger than the Samurai.

Thanks for the help. Also, a Pirate Ranger series would be awesome. Would remind me of the Wild West Rangers thing from MMPR. A revamped version of a cowboy suit would kick ass.
Also,I so want those figures. Next paycheck.....well, I gotta pay my bills and stuff, but the SECOND check......
And looking at the Zord, I really wish they used the Mammoth Shield more on the show.

Even though they don't seem to be keeping the pirate theme in Super Megaforce I hope they at least pay lip service to it.
"Hey Gosei love the new threads, but what's up with the pirate motif?"
"Well you see Zordon and I were the leads in our community theater production of The Pirates of Penzance and it just kind of stuck with me man."
