There was also a strong rumor that Stallone wanted Dolph Lundgren to reprise Ivan Drago, whom in the film is dying from cancer due to years of steroid use. I thought I read it was AIDS Yeah I think you may have been right on that. Either way it was going to involve a scene with Rocky visiting Drago in the hospital before his fight with Dixon.

I remember hearing an interview where Stallone coming up with what he would have happen to all of the villains from the Rocky Movies... I think Lang became a trainer, Gunn went into pro wrestling... and Ivan Drago committed suicide due to disgracing mother Russia. So Yeah, Stallone really wants Drago to die for some reason

Considering he was cast, costumed, and paid for Batman Returns despite being cut prior to filming I wouldn't say he counts. But it technically didn't come true... If we want to argue semantics, it's not a rumour either. Are there any pics of Marlon in the Robin outfit (or even pictures of the potential outfit)? No costuming photos have been released that I know of, but this is the concept art by Bob Ringwood (costume designer for Batman, Returns, and Forever) for the Robin outfit in Burton's third Batman movie before Shumacher took over. It's not unreasonable to think it would have been similar to this.

Christian Bale was up for Robin too, during the Batman Forever casting losing out to Chris O'Donnell. Years ago I found a picture online of a make up test with him in the costume but haven't seen it since and have heard it was a photoshop.

David Tennant was rumored for The Riddler in The Dark Knight Rises at one point.
BRIAN BLESSED was rumored to play Odin in the Thor movie. My assumption is that he was dropped because it was thought he would be so awesome in the role that it would cause some of the older and sicker people watching the movie in the audience to have heart failure.

Billy Dee Williams as Two Face in Returns/Forever. Yeah, he played Dent in the first one, but then they gave his planned role to Walken's character, then recast him completely in the third film. So I'd count it.

Johnny Depp as The Riddler in the third Christopher Nolan Batman movie.
Jude Law as James Bond.
Hulk Hogan as Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin. Damn, do I wish I could live in the alternate universe where that happened.

Robin Williams was as well. Wasn't he actually cast as the Riddler at one point in Batman Forever and then dropped out? From what I understand they were wanting him to be Riddler but Williams was annoyed that Warner had used him to get Jack Nicholson to play Joker so he refused to join the production.

My favorite movie casting "What if:"
Toshiro Mifune as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Just saying those words makes my inner cinema nerd have an orgasm.

Initial rumors of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had Christopher Walken as Willy Wonka. And...I just had a second "inner cinema nerd" mental orgasm. EDIT: Remembered another one: Ian McKellen taking over the role of Dumbledore, after Richard Harris passed away. And probably the most random one I can think of (which TRULY WAS considered by the studio, no less): Val Kilmer, of all people, playing Che Guevara in the 2008 biopic Che: A Revolutionary Life (which ended up starring Benicio del Toro)

Ian McKellen was supposedly rejected for Dumbledore because Richard Harris hated him, and wanted Peter O'Toole to replace him, before they decided on Michael Gambon.
Hayley Joel Osmont was going to be Harry Potter if Spielberg directed the first film.
Taylor Lautner was going to be replaced as Jacob Black in New Moon before he bulked up and gained loads of muscle.
Emily Browning was Stephanie Meyer's preferred choice for Bella Swan
Micky Dolenz was considered for the role of the Riddler in Batman Forever.
When a Spider-Man movie was proposed in the mid 80's, Tom Cruise was suggested for Peter Parker, Bob Hoskins as Doc-Ock, Katherine Hepburn as Aunt May, and Stan Lee as Jameson.

So I'd count it. I believe that Billy Dee Williams was paid a lot more money for two Batman movies he did not appear in (Returns and Forever) than he was paid for the Batman movie he did take part in. He took the role in the first movie and had it written into his contract that WB paid him a bunch of money for every movie they did not use him in the role of Harvey Dent/Two-Face. He expected that being established in the role and the thought of paying him NOT to play the role would have been enough to ensure he would get to be Two-Face. He was wrong.
