Gotta admit, I'm shocked Andrew W.K is still a thing. I thought he faded away and disappeared shortly after the Party Hard album. Which, for the record, I did enjoy a lot.

IT'S A DIFFERENT GUY WHO EVEN ADMITS TO AS MUCH. Posting because I think it may go lost at the bottom of the last page, but the new Andrew WK has stopped hiding that he isn't the original - twitter.com/AndrewWK/status/247896929214791681

It's kinda fascinating. Now if only we can get Ultimate Warrior and Kane to admit they're not the originals.

He's the same guy, he's just trolling. I need this. For once I just want one of these insane conspiracy theories to be true, not cause I necessarily believe in them(I'm quite the opposite in that I don't buy the majority of them) but I want there to be an exception. An exception of the most bizarre kind. I want to be able to say "Hey, remember that theory about a time traveling gorilla being responsible for the lights turning off during the Super Bowl... That shit was legit."

If there are multiple Andrew W. K.'s, the one that covers Japanese pop songs is the funniest.

I love his Twitter. It's always so funny and self aware.
And he tweeted me once with a really nice comment that made my week so I don't care if it's the same guy or not, I just know that this Andrew W.K. is awesome.
It's an interesting story though, either way.

However, in 2008, Andrew W.K. told an audience in London this, [ citation needed] [ very needed]

The pictures look so different because they've taken pictures of him pulling face and with a beard and compared them with ones of him clean shaven and looking normal.
Anyway, if you compare the man in the "Party Hard" video from whenever that was and the "It's time to Party" one from last year, it's definitely the same person.
Also, he's friends with Sami Zayn. Irrelevant, just pretty awesome.

I too have read about this theory and even before I read it, which was maybe 2 years ago, I did think he really looked different when he was doing those bits on VH1. I know people age and and people look different when they shave or change their hair, but some people look REALLY different and I really thought he looked hella different.

That shit was legit." They're different people. He's not trolling. I didn't want to clog this thread with more hearsay, but {Spoiler}I interviewed Andrew WK in 2012 for the tenth anniversary of I Get Wet. I was a big WK fan when it dropped, and at the time of the interview, I thought all the rumors about there being two Andrew WKs were a bunch of balderdash and fiddle-tee-dee.
So, I began asking about the recording of I Get Wet, and when my questions got specific about the songwriting/recording process, he told me "you would have to ask someone who was there." That kind of threw me off as a weird choice of words.
So, I kept going and asked him about a few of the promotional stops he did to promote the album in 2002, namely hosting MTV's Most Controversial Videos special and the college tour that fall. He said he's "studied those clips" and eluded to it not being him.
It's a different person. That said, he was a lot of fun to interview, and in the times I've seen him since, he's been a great guy. His wife Cherie Lily is also super talented and I spent my 26th birthday at one of her concerts.

That's interesting, see the reason I don't buy this though is that there's been absolutely nothing heard from this "first" Andrew W.K. so you would think that the guy would have come out by now and tried to set the record straight. Until that happens, I swear he's just trolling. I've seen enough interviews from earlier in his career and now that there's no one this isn't the same guy. Also, messing with people fits his personality type. Either way, I've interviewed him as well and he was nothing but nice so at least the new guy is cordial! Also, he's more musically talented because he can play classical piano and his last album of new material was really experimental and weird.

I think it's a case of the original Andrew WK just not being a fan of the industry and licensing someone else to continue playing the Andrew WK character in his absence. He either is still getting an cut and doesn't want the WK2 fact hurting his cash flow OR (and the optimist in me is leaning toward this one) he's someone who doesn't want to ruin the magic for everyone who still loves the Andrew WK character and all the joy he brings to people who really need it so he lets the character continue, which would fit his personality as well. It's all about feeling good and partying hard. But yeah, if he were messing with me, I don't think he'd completely sacrifice a question about songwriting and the recording process with "you have to ask someone who was there."

They just recently put out a 33 1/3 series book on the making of I Get Wet and from the sounds of the promotional material, they do delve into some of the "two" Andrew W.K.s thing so that might explain more since those books usually delve pretty deep into the recording process. I'm thinking about ordering it because the subject fascinates me and I'm a big fan of the music.

Sounds like a bunch of bullshit used to get more attention on his work. It doesn't matter what he's supposedly told people. I can say I'm the sole heir to the Oh Henry candy bar fortune, but that doesn't make it true. I'd be willing to bet just about anything that this is 100% publicity stunt. Birth & death records are pretty much the only thing that would change my mind.
