A lot of people in this thread are claiming that MTV is no longer "legitimate" or "relevant," but it's worth pointing out that their ratings at the moment are better than they've ever been. Just saying.

The Osbournes. Real World predated the Osbournes, but it was Ozzy and co. who got the mainstream notoriety and, after that, music fell to the wayside in favour of all manner of reality. The Osbournes were at least related to music, the Real World had absolutely nothing to do with music whatsoever.

The first few seasons boasted houses full of artists, or at least having a job directly related to the music industry. I want to say either New Orleans or Back to New York was the first that did away with those requirements.

Gotta agree with whoever said its different for everyone. For me, MTV jumped the shark as soon as I got out of high school. Coming home and watching TRL was THE thing to do. As soon as high school ended, MTV ceased mattering.

For me, it was when 120 Minutes went under.

I wonder which season was the first to be entirely music-less (in a sense) was then?

I'd say early 2000s, when music began to suck first off. Second off, 90s-and-back had originals, and they were beginning the movement, but at least Beavis and Butt-Head, Remote Control, Just Say Julie (remember THAT?), The Maxx, Cartoon Sushi, etc. were GOOD originals.
