Not trying to be a smartass, but it seems like Mike has become a Hollywood figure, and you would think being a convicted rapist would have more of a stigma to it. I'm not judging, as opposed to asking why this is. This came up because I just saw Mike as an actor on a rerun on SVU.

I think partly cuz he did serve his time, and partly because the case was so sketchy there are doubts are whether he did it or not. Also his apparent contrition for being what he was in the past now.
Not saying any of those viewpoints are 'right'; but that's the sense I get.

Not saying any of those viewpoints are 'right'; but that's the sense I get. Isn't there a portion, maybe large, that believes he didn't do it. If not, I would think the stigma of rapist would have prevented him from having an acting career if there weren't extenuating circumstances.

Well the New Zealand Immigration department hasn't as he was denied entry when he tried to visit here a couple of years of ago as part of his book tour.

I think he's always denied it--while admitting to all of his other failings. That may have something to do with it. He as convicted of it, and assuming that conviction was just--what he did was a horrible, horrible crime.
That being said, it can't/shouldn't be held against him forever. A lot of people have done far worse things than him and ended up being beloved in old age.

Well, for one, most people don't ignore Tyson's conviction. It's just that he's served his time. Which, to be blunt, is a lot more than can be said about people who've done as bad as (and worse) and are idolized (i.e., Sean Penn, Charlie Sheen, R. Kelly).

As far as celebrities go, rape is the new jaywalking.

How come people ignore what Chris Benoit did and still talk up his matches? Famous people will always have fans...no matter what.

We have to ignore these things, otherwise Tyson will eat our children.

The man served time. Why is that not contrition enough? If he did do the rape, he obviously f***ed up, but he served his time and does not go around gloating about it. Did you want him to be a social pariah forever? Isn't the whole point of putting someone--celebrity or ordinary citizen--into prison a form of rehabilitation?

We have to ignore these things, otherwise Tyson will eat our children. Don't be silly. He'll only eat your children if you challenge him to a boxing match.

Doing prison time does not make a rapist not a bad person anymore. Screw him.

He served his time and proceeded to turn into a parody of himself. Also he had a pretty good documentary. So basically, he was an asshole who went to prison and came out weirder, then turned to a different career. People are ok if you actually get comeuppance for your crime. And being an ear biting guy who lost almost all of his money on bad pigeon investments, and serving prison time, is a pretty decent comeuppance.

Drag racing and property damage are not minor things. Better than goddamn rape or spouse abuse. I didn't say they weren't, but expecting him to be punished for putting lives at risk and causing property damage isn't unfair. "Little things" made it sound like he just stole a mars bar or something.
