Were they trying to swerve people with the run-in later on that night by making it seem like they might come after Orton? He sent a good chunk of that backstage segment running his mouth at poor Bray.

There are so many things today that could follow "So what was the point of Orton..." these days that this honestly doesn't even stand out to me.
Seriously, it was last friggin' night and I can't remember it at all.
...it WAS last night, right?

Maybe, if they were being really subtle and crafty, it was to set up the Shield/Wyatts program. The Wyatts costing the Shield their match puts Orton at a bigger disadvantage in the Chamber since Orton and the Shield have kind of been boys. And if Cena wins the WWE title and faces Wyatt for it...never mind this is stupid and my head hurts.

Didn't Renee say that Bray was in line for a title shot right before that as well? I've given up on trying to make sense of this godawful Authority storyline, especially where it concerns Orton.

It's probably something that got scrapped when Punk left. Wyatt probably would have been in the Chamber to go after Cena and further that instead of this feud with the Shield coming out of nowhere.

Just a subtle red herring, and a way to put over Wyatt as a legit top guy.

Maybe it was just Orton being a heel and insulting people...?

Honestly, I don't think even the writers know what the point was. Everything is so chaotic and random right now, but instead of a good chaos it's just sloppy storytelling that's creating a million loose ends to never resolve. Every word in a promo other than establishing a match is going to happen promises to be a random mess of things that will be forgotten immediately. There's no weekly continuity, just a lot of meandering and saying things of no consequence.

Pretty obvious. It was to make people think Orton was screwed when the Wyatt's showed up, only to be shocked when they jumped Cena instead. Just basic misdirection.

It's possible, though to be fair, Shield and the Wyatts have had friction before, so it is not entirely out of nowhere. I just think it might have been pushed into motion faster than it otherwise may have been.

Maybe it was just Orton being a heel and insulting people...? Well maybe, but I don't think that answers the questions that the OP means. I think, and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, OP was asking if Orton insulting Bray Wyatt is leading to something or was a reference to something the OP had missed.

Maybe it was just Orton being a heel and insulting people...? Heels shouldn't insult heels because then they run the risk of getting cheered.

My thought on it was as the original post says it was meant to make the audience unsure of who the wyatts were coming out to attack at the end of the main event. Jerry Lawler even referenced that after what orton said maybe they were coming for him.
The other point of it was to show how paranoid orton is and how many diffierent people he has chasing his title.

when was the last time that anything Orton did had a point? guy's been presented as an interchangeable paper champ lame duck since Summerslam. forget Daniel Bryan. the guy whose been hurt the most by his booking last year is Orton and nobody else is even close. all it's missing is Steve Austin coming out and getting the crowd to chant "Boring" at him.

It almost doesn't matter at this point. It doesn't but it still should. They have only themselves to blame by making anyone not named Cena or Mysterio constantly doing face/heel turns.
